new dell xps making occasional squeal sound (not loud)

I can't seem to find a pattern as to when it happens. It just makes this low squeal sound every now and again. It lasts for maybe 5 seconds. I called Dell and they updated a driver but it is still happening and the customer service rep has become unresponsive. I can't decide if I should return the unit or if this is normal for a dell xps.

it doesn't happen at start up. Usually just randomly as I am working/using the computer. I don't believe I have heard it happen when I am not using the computer but it is on.

Assuming you have an SSD, not HDD, might be a faulty bearing in a fan. Not much else moves. Use would raise temps, kick in the fans, make a squeal, stop when temp falls and fan slows down.

Could it be coil whine? It is fairly common on XPS.

    See this YouTube video.

If you bought it direct from Dell you only have a very short time to request a return authorization, after that its yours to deal with.

Is this an XPS desktop or a laptop? You didn't include the exact model.

I work the Dell community forums. We have seen complaints about case fans speeding up and noisy on older model 8930 desktop but not recent ones.

I bought this from Costco and I have 90 days - but it is complicated because I have already used the keycode for the office suite and loaded all my stuff on the computer. that being said, if this is already defective, I should probably return it and costco allows 90 days.

This is a Dell xps tower (desktop) - Intel Core i7 8930. so it sounds like the typical issue. is this a defect or just an annoyance? I talked to dell support once already about this and they updated a driver but that didn't help

So, I guess I'm wondering. Does it make sense to have this issue fixed to avoid having to wipe it clean and repopulate a new computer.

The top case fan noise is not in all of them. Its not constant, intermittent. I have a friend that has a recording studio in Nashville and uses an 8930 (bought direct from Dell) in his recording studio and has had zero problems. Although a hassle, I would return it and get a replacement.

The 8930 that retail outlets (including Costco) have are all custom configured versions for the particular vendor.

how to get all my personal stuff off computer before return

So, how would I get all my stuff off the computer so it can not be seen by the next person who buys this computer?

also, how do i deal with the key code for office that I have already used?

    decision made!

I decided to return the computer even after talking to Dell and they said the sound was fine and nothing was wrong. I bought a different version of the same model which has only one drive (ssd 2T). I got it set up and it does have the same squeak on occasion (usually when the drive is working) so I guess it is just inherent in this model.

I am happy I made the switch though. I didn't like that the first computer had two different drives (one ssd and one data).

    thanks for all your feedback
