Windows 10 free upgrade kills Toshiba Blu-ray player

I'm looking for a fix for my Toshiba Blu-ray player (Matshita BD-CMB UJ172). It stopped working when I upgraded to Windows 10. It will start, but will not play Blu ray or DVD disc . I'm not able to locate a new driver or firmware for the player.

    Toshiba Satellite P70-A
    Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4700MQ CPU @2.40GHz
    Windows 10
    version 1903

    Thanks

    Welcome to Ten Forums Pal654.

Did you upgrade from Windows 7? The Media Player in Windows 7 could play DVDs, but that ability was removed from Media Player in Windows 10 (I believe due to licensing costs).

To play video disks you'll need a 3rd-party app. VLC is a media player that will allow you to play DVDs in Windows 10.

Try a free BluRay player like this one Best Free Blu-ray Player Software for Windows - Leawo Blu-ray Player

Does the drive work otherwise to read/write data DVDs?

Hi, you appear to have these available:
    Drivers - dynabook

You haven't quoted the driver page for your laptop and I couldn't find, in a limited time, the real Toshiba one.

You could try downloading and using the one for Win 8, installing it in compatibility mode if necessary.

A screenshot of the details of the current driver installed from the Device Manager could be helpful.

What program have you used to date to try to play disks?

Well, that doesn't alter the fact that Windows 10 has no native ability to play DVDs. What had you been using to play video disks in W8? In W10 you'll need a 3rd-party app.

Toshiba supplies a DVD Player on models with a DVD drive, and I presume it does for Blu-ray as well.

Mine still works after the Windows 10 update and indeed Toshiba provided it as an update for Windows 10 compatible Laptops back then during the free offer.
It should still be listed for your Laptop. However that model is not listed as a supported one for Windows 10.

The drivers for Optical drive as such are generic and part of Windows 10, very unlikely to be a Firmware update.

Windows 10 itself no longer supplies the codecs required for playing DVDs, you have to install another Player. You can try VLC Player.
    For Toshiba drivers:
Support – Business PCs - dynabook
They still list the Video Player for Windows 8.1 for that model, so you could try applying the Windows 8.1 compatibility mode on the install, dates from July 2017.

Post #5, is the correct website, Toshiba have passed support for legacy Laptops to them. For the Video Player(DVD ?) put in keyword "video".
    Don't see the Blu-Ray.

Within the downloaded ZIP file there is another self extracting file which you will have to expand and save somewhere and then go thru the kerfuffle of applying the compatibility mode.

Looks like it's telling you it indeed won't run under Win 10 - it's looking for Win 8.

Whilst you could try installing it in compatibility mode for Win 8, it will depend how it does that check.

A bit late to the party, but...

Can the drive read data CDs, DVDs, or BluRay disks?

As regards movies disks, older versions of Windows had a native capability to play DVDs. (Not BluRay disks.) It was removed in Windows 10. (Microsoft didn't wish to continue paying license fees for the codecs.)

The freeware VLC Media Player (VLC: Official site - Free multimedia solutions for all OS! - VideoLAN) can play DVDs.

I'm not sure what software package you were trying to install in post 8, but I presume that it was video player software, rather than graphics drivers. Try the suggestion in post 9 to use compatibility mode. Right click on the installer (.exe), and click on "Troubleshoot Compatibility" That'll allow you to run the installer in a mode compatible with an older version of Windows.

    Good luck.
