Driver issues in Windows 10 Home rebuild

    Hi everyone

I just made the transition to Windows 10 on my i5 desktop, and clean installed W10 on a new Samsung EVO 250GB SSD with only a minimum of peripherals attached during the OS install. I then installed my ASUS B85M-G mobo's latest drivers for W10, starting with the chipset, then Graphics, LAN and Audio. Unlike W7, ASUS has not provided any USB3 drivers for W10.

When I checked in Device Manager, there were exclamation marks on -

    1) PCI Simple Communications Controller
    2) SM Bus Controller
    3) Unknown Device

So I clean reinstalled the OS again, and installed Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility first, and this dealt with (1) above, followed by the other drivers. I now know I can disable (2) and (3) from advice provided on this platform

    SM Bus Controller Driver

Issues I now have is -

    a) Device Manager page keeps refreshing itself every two seconds.
    b) Can I use W7 USB3 drivers for W10?
    c) BIOS date and time stays correct after being set as long as I do not boot into Windows. Once I boot into Windows, the BIOS clock resets itself to 21/01/2020 and starts to count upwards from 02:06:00. Changing the CMOS battery and clearing RTC RAM makes no difference.

I would like to resolve these issues before connecting to the internet and installing Windows updates, to avoid cementing in the software glitches.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Windows 10 installation disk has almost all USB 3.x drivers so you don't need to provide any USB 3.x drivers. Those USB3 .x drivers on the CD are for Win 7 installation.

Windows 10 Fast Start is a mix of hibernation and fresh boot. When you boot is faster as you use part of the previous boot.
Under Windows, ask for a restart to load a fresh boot.

Open device manager. Is there still any unknown devices (yellow alerts)?
For the missing Intel drivers, Intel® Driver & Support Assistant
Uninstall it after use. It has a tracking feature.

For the date and time, you have to look at the time zone the computer is set.

    Thanks Megahertz

The Intel Driver and Support Assistant found just one outdated driver, Intel HD Graphics 4600, so I allowed it to conduct an update, then bingo, Device Manager is no longer showing any exclamation marks!

However, the Device Manager page is still refreshing itself every two seconds though, is that something I should be worrying about?

The BIOS clock issue also resolved automatically after connecting to the internet.

Final question, if I plan to run more than one hard drive in the PC then I need to install the ASUS Windows 10 SATA driver for my mobo, right?

Nope, not unless you plan to build a RAID from those disks (rather than having them remain two separate, independent drives).

There may be circumstances outside of RAID where the RST drivers might be useful, but they aren't required.

Device manager should not be continuously refreshing.

Consider backing up drivers > clean install > restoring drivers > performing windows updates > installing applications > making free backup images

Check the BIOS version: upgrade to 3602

    @Megahertz Congrats!

@sjc312 : I think you should check windows components for corruptions ( if any ) : SFC & DISM . Also see Here!

    Thanks. ...

Don't worry about the refreshing under Device Manager page.

The SATA driver is used by the OS (Win10) to communicate with the SATA ports. As it is already installed on the OS, it will be used for all the drives attached to the SATA ports.

As Zbook recommended, download and install the latest BIOS for your MB. Install it under BIOS. Use Asus EZ flash.

I've had the BIOS 3602 update installed since last October, so it looks like I'm good to go. Thank you Megahertz, bobkn, zbook and Vineet Garj - you guys ROCK!
