Secondary internal disk shows up as removable (Intel RST)

Hi, I have Lenovo C730 with 512 GB M.2 drive and secondary 1 TB HDD. Problem is that Windows shows up secondary drive as removable. In C730 BIOS there is no any settings related to "Hot-Plug" or something like that. I have latest Intel RST driver installed (17.7.0.1006). Windows 10 1909.

    I have tried this - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...moveable-media
And this - Driver "Policies" Tab not showing in Windows - Super User
But none of these solutions works. After Windows restart, secondary drive still shows up as removable. I think Intel RST has different registry entries for this. Maybe someone has possible solution?

Hello ferums, and welcome to Ten Forums.

You might double check to make sure write caching is enabled for the internal disk like below.

Enable or Disable Disk Write Caching in Windows 10

If that still doesn't help, then you might see if turning off SATA hot swap in your BIOS settings may help.

In C730 BIOS has no hot-swap or hot-plug or any other related settings to it.
Write caching has already enabled by default, as you can see in pictures on Imgur album I added in my first post.

Have you already tried connecting the drive to different SATA ports?

Yes, C730 has three SATA ports, tried them all, no changes. BIOS and all drivers are already up to date, because I have reinstalled Windows at least three times..

I have searched for solution for three days. In this forums and all the Google I have found so many possible solutions. But when you have tried all possible solutions you have found and you realize that none of them worked, it makes you sad and mad at same time..

I really thinks that Intel RST has different registry entries to make internal drive not to be marked as removable or Lenovo has really f****d up their desktops.

Can you post a screen shot of the issue at hand? Sometimes a picture really is worth a thousand words.

Also what Lenovo C730 do you have? Link?

    Thanks.

    Also:
In the BIOS, Advanced > Storage Configuration > Sata Mode selection: make sure this is set to AHCI.

Search in C:\ for iastor.sys . Make sure you have it.

    @sygnus21
I have uploaded some pictures to Imgur I mentioned in my first post - Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media - Album on Imgur
    Link to exact C730 model I have - http://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Temp...2001031747.pdf

    @TV2
Currently it's set to Intel RST Premium With Intel Optane System Acceleration. Basically I can choose between AHCI or Intel RST Premium With Intel Optane System Acceleration. Switching between them requires Windows reinstallation. I have tried AHCI as well, nothing changes, secondary drive still shows up as removable.
    iastor.sys is present on C:\.

Check on the Lenovo support page for your model for a SATA driver. Anything regarding Storage or SATA. Sometimes they will have a separate driver other than IRST.

Almost always, this behavior is caused because the AHCI driver is not playing nice with the chipset, either due to a limited driver, an incorrect driver, or a conflict.

Few days ago I found solution (or workaround, call it whatever you want) which will disable safely remove option for secondary disk drive while Intel RST is installed and running.

    1. Open Device Manager, find your HDD or SSD and open its Properties
    2. Select Details tab and choose Device instance path
    4. Note the visible value and close Device Manager

    5. Open Registry Editor and under HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum find your HDD or SSD by value you noted before
    7. Find Capabilities key and note its value, in my case it was 100

    8. Right click on key folder and select Copy Key Name, then close Registry Editor
    9. Open Task Scheduler and create new task -
    · Change User or Group: set it to SYSTEM
    · Configure for: chose your platform
    · Triggers tab > New > Begin the task > At startup
    · Actions tab > New
    - Program/script: reg.exe
    - Add arguments: add "paste your copied key name here" /v Capabilities /t REG_DWORD /d <your Capability number minus 4 here> /f

    Example: add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\SCSI\Disk&Ven_WDC&Prod_WD10EZRZ-00HTKB0\4&1d1e5f&0&000200" /v Capabilities /t REG_DWORD /d 96 /f

    10. Restart your computer and be happy now

To undo the changes you made above, simply remove created task and reboot.
Without the scheduled task, the system will automatically restore the registry value back to their original after a reboot.

Remember, this is only for Intel RST. If your are using Microsoft Standard AHCI controller, you can use this solution - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...moveable-media
