Laptop - Intel HD 620 issue - Only external monitor displays

    Version 1903 (OS Build 18362.535)

I have been using my laptop (Dell Inspiron 1557) while connected to an external monitor (connected via HDMI using a HDMI to VGA Adapter) for several months now.

When disconnected from the external monitor, the laptop's own monitor would not display, not even in safe mode.
I could see the Dell startup logo, but as soon as Windows started, the screen would go black.

To get the laptop screen to display, I need to disable the Intel HD 620 driver in Device Manager while connected to an external monitor and restart.

I tried removing the devices in device manager and restarting, it starts off well but as soon as windows update installs the Intel HD 620 drivers, the screen goes blank and I need to connect to the external monitor to see what is on screen.

    Welcome to TenForums.

When you disconnect the external monitor, are you also disconnecting the HDMI to VGA adapter? The reason I ask is that I wonder if the HDMI to VGA adapter causes the system to still think that an external monitor is still connected.

    Second, try this:

While the external monitor is still connected, press the hotkey on your system used to switch between internal and external display. On my laptop, I do this with Fn + F4 but that may be different on your system. As an alternative, you should be able to go into Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays to change this as well. Once switched to the internal display, then disconnect the external monitor.

or Both at the same time [toggle through 3 settings with the Fn + another F key]

It does not detect my laptop's monitor.
Only the external monitor is detected.

Okay, the fact that it is not even detecting the internal display is obviously a problem. But a big clue for me is the fact that if we uninstall the Intel HD Graphics 620 display driver, the display works. That leads me to think that there must be a problem with the display driver.

Here is what I would like to suggest trying:

    1) Download the latest driver for the graphics adapter from Dell.
    2) Also download the latest driver from Intel directly from here:

    Download Intel(R) Graphics - Windows(R) 10 DCH Drivers

    3) COMPLETELY uninstall the current display driver. This means going into Device Manager, right-click the Intel HD Graphics 620, choose uninstall device, MAKE SURE that you select the check box that says "Delete the driver software for this device", then click Uninstall. This will make sure that it cannot simply reinstall the same driver again as soon as you reboot.

    4) Reboot
    5) Install the latest Dell supplied driver.

    6) If you still have difficulties at this point, then repeat the same steps but use the driver you downloaded from Intel.

Thank you for the help but I was unable to resolve the issue.

I read somewhere that it may be resolved by disconnecting the battery for a short amount of time, which I will try in the near future.

Does this laptop have 2 graphics options?
One being the Intel graphics on the processor and another being an nVidia or ATI/AMD chip on the board?

Yeah, this may be a common problem regarding switching graphics. The system is supposed to do it automatically but often times it does not work correctly.
Normally the problem is the system won't switch to the more powerful graphics chip.
Let me see if I can dig up some info on that. It's been a while.

Some manufacturers, especially Dell, insist on using their customized drivers. If the graphics drivers for either the Intel or ATI graphics was updated from anywhere other that Dell it can cause problems.
Check to see if the drivers offered for your model match what you have installed. If not try and install the most recent Dell drivers.
