Format Question, Please (W10, WD External HD)

    Hi,

Thanks for all the previous help. Super Forum and folks.

Found an "old" WD 1 TPB external HD. Bought it about a yr ago.
Know nothing about its history, but would like to erase everything on it, and use in my Mac or W10 pc.

Mac wont recognize it in the normal way.
    W10 won't either.

Would like to format it anew as ExFat using my W10 pc.
It does show up in Disk Management on the W10 pc. See image which I hope is Attached ?

    Called, I think, "Disk 1"

But, cannot see how, from here, I do a new ExFat formatting.

Might someone please explain the steps to go thru ?

Right clicking, etc, does nothing in the way of bringing up a Format menu.

    Thanks,
    Bob

Make sure it's disk 1. Assuming this disk is still good.
Open Admin command prompt (Win+X->Command Prompt(Admin)) then type:

    diskpart
    select disk 1
    clean
    convert mbr
    create partition primary
    format fs=ExFAT quick
    assign
    exit

My way is to download a copy of GPARTED.iso and burn the LiveCD from it, boot to it and delete everything on the drive then create a single partition and format as exFAT. Another way is to use my Linux Mint computer with its included GPARTED to do the same. For external USB drives for simply storing data the boot process is not needed.

    Diskpart is a powerful tool.

Make sure the disk you want to clean is disk 1 or you can erase all your system disk

    I would add one command

    diskpart
list disk (see if your WD 1 TPB external HD is disk 1)
    select disk 1
    clean
    convert mbr
    create partition primary
    format fs=ExFAT quick
    assign
    exit
