this just in: try this new VIA HD audio driver package (v6.0.11.1000).
I did awhile ago and the Win10 shows in the driver titles.

(@edit - When going into "Sounds" Windows 10 will still request to cancel the enhancements even after the updated drivers are installed and even then it doesn't fix the 3-note chiming and heavy stuttering described below.)

Problem now is I get a 3-note chime (think USB being plugged and unplugged) at random times. especially heavy during gaming. Event log says the audio is still having problem but the message and MS themselves shed no light on what the problem could be-

    Hmmm.....

I've installed the new drivers without issues but I'm still not getting any sound

I have Speakers selected as the playback device but no sound is produced.

You haven't told us what sound card or chip that you have. However, one of the most common is the VIA HD Audio chip. I found that the "latest" drivers (v6.0.11.1000) didn't work.

See Post #14 and follow the instructions precisely if you have the VIA HD Audio chip.

For me that driver works. Only problem is that headphone jack does not recognize insertion and switch off speaker.

As per "My System Specs" I have an ASUS M4A78-HTPC motherboard which has integrated VIA HD audio (I assume that is what you mean by "audio chip"?

I have twice followed the instructions in post #14 precisely. It still does not work for me unfortunately. When viewing Playback Devices it looks like sound is being played but nothing comes out of the speakers.

    Hi

Which device is selected as default within Playback Devices (ie what is the full name of the device)? What happens when you configure and test the selected default device via the configure button within the Playback Devices windows? Please can you post a screenshot of the Playback Devices window

Never mind. I'm an idiot. I didn't realise the link in step six of post #14 was in the post. I was using the link in the original post. All working now. Many thanks.

You're not an idiot. It was a detailed process and not really too intuitive. You'd logically think that the latest drivers would have worked but they didn't for me. I worked on this problem for about a week before I finally found the solution.

Glad that it's working for you!

    Cheers,

Ah, so near so far... If I try to play an MP3 or view a video it says that it's in a format that is not supported, and when I click on the Playback devices I get this error again:

EDIT: and now it's working again

I e-mailed ASUS tech support asking for help and this is part of their reply:
For this issue, please firstly ensure that the speaker has been as the default device under the sound option in the Control Panel, then switch to the Enhance option, uncheck all the options here and try again.
If right click the audio controller in the device and choose to unistall it, then reboot the OS and check if the system would auto reload the audio driver for the system.
Then please ensure that the Windows update has been enabled, and the available updates have been installed.
If still, I suggest you to use the compatibility mode install the Windows 8 audio driver in your OS for a test.

    Via Audio Driver
    Version V6.0.10.1200

    http://support.asus.com.cn/Download....ER60110200.zip

I had already attempted their first couple of suggestions but they didn't work. I tried again but they still didn't work.

Then I downloaded and installed their new drivers. It didn't work the on first two attempts. My third attempt finally worked. I did it in a little different order. Here are my steps:
    1. Go the Device Manager
    2. Expand "Audio inputs and outputs"
    3. Right click each entry and click "Uninstall". If it asks if you want the drivers deleted, click "yes"
    4. Right click "Sound video and game controllers"
    5. Right click "VIA HD Audio" and click uninstall. If it asks if you want the drivers deleted, click "yes"
    6. Download the drivers from the ASUS reply (above).
    7. Unpack them, right click the "setup.exe" file, click "properties", click the "Compatibility" tab, tick "Run this program in compatibility mode" and choose "Windows 8". Click "Apply"
    8. Right click "Setup.exe" and click "Run as administrator".
    9. Let the drivers install and reboot.
    10. Now set up your microphone.

    The drivers installed are interesting:
    • With the standard Win 10 installation, in the "Device Manager/Audio inputs and outputs", there were entries for Microphone and Headset. With the newly installed drivers, there was only an entry for microphone. In both cases the driver was Microsoft version 10.0.10240 dated 2015/07/09. Edit: If anyone is still experiencing this problem, it would be interesting to see what would happen if the only thing you did was to delete "headset" from the device manager.
    • With the standard Win 10 installation, the "Device Manager/Sound video and game controllers/VIA HD Audio" driver was VIA 6.0.11.800. The newly installed driver is "VIA 6.0.11.200 dated 2013/11/01"(installed in Win 8 compatibility mode)

Thankfully (and frustratingly) both the mic and speakers are now working.

Hopefully others that are having this problem will find this helpful.
    Good Luck!
I went around and around with this problem too (ASUS S500CA microphone would not work after Win10 upgrade). After much frustration the fix ended up being very simple. From device manager, under: sound, video and game controllers select VIA HD or VIA HD(Win10) driver, select update driver, choose "browse computer," then "let me pick from list," then select the generic High Definition Audio driver (not any of the VIA HD choices) install, restart, fixed.

Interestingly, an update changed my driver back to VA HD(win10) today, microphone stopped working again. I quickly fixed by changing it back to generic driver.
