    epson 1200

Just recently upgraded to windows 10

    Windows 10 Pro 64 bit
    CPU: i7-4770k @350GHz
    Ram: 16GB
    Graphics: Radeon 580 8GB vram
    Winver 1903 OS Build 18362.418

Today I tried to use my old Epson 1200 and it would not work. I looked at device manager and it was listed but when I tried to update the driver it could not find a compatible driver on the net.

I DL'd Vuescan and it worked but but did not care for the watermark and I didn't want to buy it.

After some searching I found this thread:

How to Install Old Epson Perfection 1200 Scanner in Windows 10

Of course it is old but I decided to give it a try. So I set out to follow the recipie. I DL'd the 2400 file and installed it.

So far so good. But when I went back to the Device Manager the Epson 1200U was no longer listed, under Other Devices. Under Other Device is only Unknown Device. I tried turning the scanner off and back on, I tried restarting the computer. No Joy.

How do i get Windows to see the Epson?--it is powered up and connected.

    Any help would be appreciated...

Not much that you can do with obsolete hardware. Vuescan is going to be your best bet. You could always use Linux with it. http://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/search/01/search/searchModuleFromResult

Could it be that the "unknown device" is the scanner? Would it even make a difference if it was?

One thing I've seen is that some devices like older printers or scanners don't like USB 3 ports or USB 3 cables, seems USB 2 is the only solution. To check which the computer has open Device Manager, expand the USB item and check for Enhanced [for USB 2]. USB 3 will show for those along with eXtensible in their listing. The usual visual id is black centers in plugs and sockets for USB 2 and blue centers for USB 3. The Notebook I'm on now has 2 black ports but are combination 2 and 3. A marking on ports will be like a trident for USB 2 and have the added letters of SS for the USB 3 SuperSpeed ports.

My old Epson Perfection 1200 scanner still works as I posted. Ensure you install the Epson software as an administrator from an admin account in compatibility mode for Windows 7. You also have to run Epson Scan in admin mode. Sometimes Windows forgets the scanner. With the scanner turned on, select the unknown scanner device then manually browse to install the Epson Perfection 2400 driver. Ignore any messages this driver is not for your device. If the scanner doesn't appear then check your cables or try a different cable and USB port.

^ Thank you, thank you thank you!

I was hoping you or someone who had a 1200 and gotten it working would chime in. Will follow the instructions to the letter later on today. And report the results.back here.

Note I started the 2015 thread you referenced. The Windows Store Scan app works fine withe the old scanner if you just want a simple interface.

Just to be clear and sure I understand, how do you install the drivers / software "as an administrator from an admin account in compatibility mode for Windows 7"? I know how to set the compatibility mode but not sure how to go about installingas an administrator..., etc..

Also once the drivers are installed (I might have to reinstall because I didn't do anything special when I first installed them) I have an Epson Scan icon on my desktop that wants to know which scanner I want--the 1200 or the 2400. Which should I choose or does it make a difference?

Right click on the Epson installer file and choose Run as Administrator (from an admin account). Select the 2400 scanner. Epson Scan does not run properly in my user account unless I right click the icon ad select Run as Administrator.

Hurray! It worked a treat! Once I reinstalled the software fas administrator and restarted my computer, the Epson 1200U was recognized in the Device manager. From there it was all gravy.

    Thank you!.
