Ahh, I get you. The same therefore could be said about USB port expansion card, M.2 Expanders, RAID cards etc. Basically anything that uses PCIe lanes.

In my case, for the most part, PCs have 28 PCIe CPU lanes. The exact reason why we stick with HEDT is because mainstream systems had traditionally been limited to 16 lanes (now 16+4).

So, it looks like the speed issues are not the NVMe drivers (3.1 - 3.3 all provide abysmal results), and it's not a PCIe lane shortage. Surely 21 SSDs drives can't all be faulty. Nah! Perhaps as was stated earlier, there is something common on all systems that is causing the poor performance?

Well, I have a Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 500GB, while chkdsk /r it says 1.2 GB/s (or 1.4 or 1.7, I don't remember exactly) less than 10% of the time. Most of the time it does not even saturate SATA II.

Clonezilla backup speed is about 18 GB/min.

Later edit: did another test, it's 1.2 GB/s and 75% of the time it behaves like SATA III or lower.

Oddly, I installed Samsung Magician and the NVME driver, but SM is saying that its installed on my 970 but the 980 is using the Microsoft driver.

It's a PCIe 4.0 ssd, it shouldn't need or use the NVMe driver, plut it isn't listed in the drivers install guide:

@swarfega I have checked all over Samsung's SSD pages and have not found any firmware versions(probably because they're new and no updates yet), but I recommend that, if like me, you keep Magician turned off, you open Magician once in a while and check the updates tab(at bottom) and see if any new firmware updates exist.
There probably will eventually be one sometime, as I believe the controller on the 980's are a new type being for both PCIe 3 and 4, and when enough systems have them installed, bugs will probably be found..... eventually.

And it may put the 980 at the top of the list of drives in Disk Management.

I also tend to agree with Cliff about a new Samsung driver coming out for it someday.
