My OS is Windows 10 version 1903 OS build 18362.418.
I have just noticed that an old Seagate HD
ST312002 2A
which I have in an external USB enclosure
has just stopped working.
In device manager I am told:
"device not migrated due to partial or ambiguous match".
I fear that this means the driver is obsolete.
Am I correct?
Can anything be done about this?

Welcome to the forum. Can you post a screenshot from disk management showing all the details. When windows sees a new disk it writes a signature to it so it knows what it is if it sees 2 the same you get the error it happens if it's been cloned at some point
I would try to remove HDD from enclosure and physically connect it to the PC mobo and then check.
I don't think that it is possible to connect the HDD directly to the PC motherboard. As I recall, that was my first idea but I found it impossible (I can't recall why) and so resorted to the enclosure and USB connection. This worked fine until recently.
I find on the internet that a lot of people have had similar problems and that these problems are caused by drivers being incompatible with older hardware.
I attempted to find a Windows 10 driver for the HDD on Seagate's site; but to no avail.
Is it sata or ide you shouldnt need drivers for normal drives
It is an IDE drive.
I have tried "rollling back" the Windows OS.
Now, the error message in "Device Manager" has cleared.
Also, I get a sensible readout from "Disk Manager": no problems identified at all.
BUT I still can't read the disk in "File Manager".
I think it is now entirely clear that this is a problem with some recent updates to Windows 10.
