external hard drive is connecting and the disconnecting.

I have a Seagate 5 TB external hard drive. I've had it for years. We have had it hooked up to our xbox. Today we turned on the xbox and it wasn't registering that the external hard drive was connected. So I hooked the external hard drive up to my Alienware laptop. It does not show up in the File explorer. I opened up Device Manager and opened disk drives. When I hook up the external hardware it will populate in the disk drive sub folder for about five seconds. And then it disappears. I have to un plug it and plug it back in to get it to pop back up for another 5 seconds. When I right click on the external hard drive it says it is working fine. Then when it disconnects it gives me error code 45 - device disconnected. But it isn't disconnected. Any ideas?

Possibly the SATA to USB board is going bad. If it has an external power supply that may be going bad as well.

Sounds like it is dying and you need to get a new one to replace it.

Thanks, we did get a new one. I was hoping we could get it working long enough to transfer the data.

You could take the old one out of the enclosure and connect it directly to a SATA port on a desktop motherboard.

Depending on how important the data is to retrieve, you might try:
