Another issue started with HP Envy Photo 6255 Printer

Hi. I recently started a thread about scan to pc is currently unavailable issue that was never resolved. Now when I print sometimes the printer icon shows 1 document pending even though the page printed. I can keep printing but the number of documents pending increases according to the number of pages I print and the print icon remains in the notification area. I can clear the problem in several ways but I don't know why it's happening. I've reinstalled the print driver and software (again) and even reset the printer to factory defaults both with no success. Before I get in touch with HP again I was hoping someone here might know what to do to stop this issue. This printer has been a constant pain in the butt! Thanks in advance for any replies.

I don't know for a certainty if this issue is the cause for the difficulty that you are seeing, but it might be worth looking at the following article under the "known issues in this update"section. This might apply if you are on Windows 10 1903 and the problem began just after installing KB4517211.

You might try rolling back that update to see if that affects the issue.

It is not only happening with Windows but iOS, iPadOS and MacOS. It just takes time for the Spooler to tell the OS that it is done before the OS states that the Print Queue is cleared.

Did you update the printer firmware? As I had many issues with an HP 5520 some weeks ago, I upgraded it.

It is a Print Spooler problem with Windows in this case not a firmware issue.

I'm sure the issue started before the KB4517211 update. It started at least a week ago. Thanks for your reply.

In this case the printer icon will show 1 (or more) documents pending and will not go away unless I clear it in 1 of several ways. The printer icon should show 0 documents pending after the page or pages are printed and then disappear after 20 seconds or so.

hsehestedt, I just uninstalled the update in question. I'll see if the problem stops happening over the next couple of days and will let you know if it worked or not. Thanks again for your suggestion.

Thanks for the link. I just uninstalled KB4517211 to see if that caused the problem. If it didn't cause the problem I'll do Reset and Clear Spooler.

    Edit....

Sorry, tried to post from my phone a few minutes ago and totally butchered my message. This should clear things up....

Microsoft just released a new cumulative update today (KB4524147) that supposedly resolves the printing issue introduced in KB4517211. If you find that the problem you were having is resolved after having removed KB4517211, my suggestion then would be to get KB4524147 installed since it will contain the fixes that were in KB4517211 plus the fix for this printing issue.

I'm still not certain that this is what was causing the problem you encountered so I'd be interested to hear what your results are.

hsehestedt: The problem still happened after uninstalling KB4517211 so I reinstalled it. Then the newer update (KB4524147) was available so I installed it. I noticed after installing KB4524147 that the KB4517211 update was no longer in the Installed Updates list in Programs and Features (Control Panel) View Installed Updates. The KB4524147 may have uninstalled it? Anyhow I just now printed a page and the 1 document(s) pending issue happened again. It's easy enough to clear back to 0 documents pending without a computer reboot. The problem doesn't happen every time I print. It is not a document(s) stuck in queue problem and does not cause the printer not to print when the issue occurs. I kind of wish that I didn't purchase this printer. Bottom line is that I have no idea why this is happening but short of being a pain in the butt I can live with it. I appreciate your support.

bro67: The Reset and Clear Print Spooler methods are the same thing that I was doing manually. There is 1 additional step I have to make however to bring the Document(s) pending to 0 and make the printer icon timeout and disappear. In Devices and Printers I have to change the default printer for example to One Note. Then I change the default printer back to the HP Envy and the document(s) pending reverts to 0 documents pending and the printer icon times out and disappears like it should. Thanks for your input. Much appreciated.
