I want to partition my main drive C so that I can install windows 7. I'm using disk management to do it and I right click C and click shrink volume. The size before shrink is 609,184MB and the size available shrink is 340MB and the size after shrink is 609,884MB. I want to shrink it by 150,000MB. I have 392,000MB free on this drive so it looks like I'm doing something wrong or I've got something protecting it from being shrunk.
Hi, anything significant to do with changes in the size of your Windows partition needs to be done with a 3rd party partition manager such as Minitool Partition Wizard or Aomei Partition Assistant.
So the disk management tool in Windows 10 is no good and I need a 3rd party tool?
Disk Management can do certain things. The things it can do it can do competently. It is limited.
Is this an HDD or SSD?

Agreed, Disk Management can't do some things that involve the partition Windows is installed on.
It's an HDD drive. I'll try the mini tool.
As ever, before making changes, make sure you have a current disk image (e.g. Macrium reflect - free - + external storage for disk image files) so you can recover- even if your system disk fails. Also is a full backup of imaged partitions.
Members here tirelessly recommend the routine regular use of disk imaging.
I 'm using the mini tool and and I shrunk it until I had 150GB and hit OK and now it says unallocated 150GB. I haven't hit the apply button. How do I assign a drive letter and the NTFS file system? Ok I discovered if I rright click and hit create it had it all filled in for me.
