D drive disappeared after Win 10 update

My D drive no longer appears at File Explorer, My PC; or at Disk Management. Before this problem I am sure D drive was present at File Explorer, My PC; and at Disk Management. The problem started happening a few days ago around the time of the latest Windows 10 update, "Feature update to Windows 10, version 1903". I can not say for sure that the D drive disappeared after the update, but I think it is very likely. I checked Event Log to verify this, but it is filled to the maximum by warnings and errors, generated every 5 seconds, regarding the D drive problem, and does not extend back in time to the update.

The first sign of a problem was pop up messages in the lower right corner of my screen which I did not understand, so I deleted them. I do not recall what these messages said, something about something being disconnected. Then I realized my D drive had disappeared. Rescan Disk has no effect. My D drive is a large partition, about 2/3 of the total hard disk. No system Restore Points appear, they are erased by every update I believe. I would prefer to avoid downloading a third party application if possible.

    Thanks for any help.

Hi, if you don't see the partition in Disk Management, the best hope you have is that it's possible to recover the partition.

That will need 3rd party software.

First, let's check your disk. For that, again, you need 3rd party software as Windows has no means of doing this itself.
Option 1: Free today: the best program I know:
    PC Software Download Deals

    Option 2:
If you don't want to install such software, you can create a live boot disk (instructions available at the top of the Software and Apps section of this forum). You would then boot your PC from that and use some of the tools provided.

Option 3: Use a portable program
    Download Portable HD Tune 2.55
    Health and Error Scan tabs

After that, it will be a matter of you accepting using a partition recovery tool to explore that possibility.

    See:
After Windows 10 1903 upgrade, SSD drive letter disappeared
for similar - resolved by restoring a disk image.

Do you have a disk image or other backup?
tenforums continually advises people to use disk imaging routinely, and particularly before making a major change. E.g. Macrium reflect (free/paid).

Examples of using a partition recovery tool:

I just caught a screenshot of two error messages. As I said above, do not clearly remember the messages I got previously, but these two seem similar.

I do have a Macrium Reflect Free disk image, but I am out of town and cannot access it until 10/2. I know it has C
drive on it but I am not sure it has D drive as well. My D: drive had very little data on it and I have that little separately backed up and confirmed that it is uncorrupted. I realize now I should have said earlier that I just want to get the disk space back, I don't care about the data on D drive. Does that simplify the issue?

    Thank you for your reply.

Create a new partition. (Assuming D: is a partition on your system drive as you say:
My D drive is a large partition, about 2/3 of the total hard disk.
    ).

Note: problems have been reported with various builds ot the Intel Rapid Storage driver.

    Disconnecting... driver or hardware problem
Try Standard SATA AHCI Controller driver instead of Intel RST one.
Check both cables of the disk.

And corresponding events should be found in Event Viewer.

Muchomurka: Can you give me instructions on how to install Standard SATA AHCI Controller driver?

    Thanks

P.S. : Your advice to check both cables of the disk I think does not apply as I am referring to the internal hard disk.
