Why Will It Only Print To File?

Suddenly my computer will not print to the printer. It sets off to do so, everything seems fine, but then while I'm waiting for the print to start up pops the screen asking me what name to save the pdf file to?

It is wanting to print to pdf all the time.

I've been through the screens and everywhere I find a 'print to file' I make sure it is not checked.

    What more can I do?

Normally you have an option to select which printer you want. I'd guess your default printer is not set apporopriately.

    Perhaps you've installed a program that's added a printer.

    Notice this option:

With that deselected, you can assign your default printer.

    See tenforums tutorial:

Yep, I've got that organised. The default printer is the pcl6.

But really that's a driver name not a printer name is the problem I think.

When I try to print to it I get a message asking me to find the printer I want to use.

I'm thinking that means I've selected a driver and now it wants to know which printer to use it on.

And it offers 'enter address' or 'network search' or 'shares search' and I can't do any good with any of them.

Don't have an address, don't know how to find it, and don't know about network or shares searches, either...

    :)

p.s. I might have installed the wrong driver or something. This printer is USB connected direct to my pc. It is not a network printer really at all in that case, is it? I printed out the config report from it and there's no mention of a network address. Bit funny that I think. Even if it's not a network printer I'd expect the config report to have line for the IP address for if it were and I'd expect it to be blank on this occasion.

    But there's nothing.

There was a usb msi driver and I downloaded and ran it, too. I don't know if it did anything at all.

Basics: Is your printer attached to your PC or is it a network printer? You mention
don't know about network or shares searches,
Please post some screenshots to show your configuration and available printers, what you're trying to print from and the drop-down options for available printers.

Example: (and here the Canon printer is attached to another PC in the next room)

    Otherwise all is guesswork.

If your printer is networked, there are plenty of tutorials to help you...

no problem. I think I answered some of what you're asking with my edit to my previous post written as you were writing yours. But here's a screenshot too...

MS print to pdf isn't there any more. I uninstalled it but of course that hasn't helped. :)

    EDIT:

FIXED!! No problem. All over. Followed some MS instructions I found somewhere and uninstalled all printers and then rebooted. Win10 quietly found the right driver somewhere and installed it and the thing worked fine as soon as I tried it.

Thanks for coming to my help - it is appreciated you know.. :)

Is your printer attached to the computer via a USB cable? Or is it a shared computer on your network?
Your drop down menu shows NO printers installed.

Yes. It just shows the drivers doesn't it, not the printer? As I just said in my edit to my last post it's all fixed now.

    Thanks again. :)

We were typing at the same time.
I'm glad it's fixed.now. You didn't say how the printer was attached or what the make and model # is.

You're quite right. Sorry about that. A bit remiss of me. All worked out well in the end. :)
