    Definitely a better solution, but a multiple number of times more expensive than my current arrangement.

    Unfortunately I'm lumbered with a laptop. It's my dream to build my own PC at some time in the future.
    Not expensive. The Asus Routers/Access Points running Merlin allow you to setup a NAS. I use Cloud storage for everything since I am using multiple devices and it just makes things easier. If you are dealing with slow Internet Speeds, look at either building a SBC (Small Board Computer) as storage or get an Asus RT-68U and use that.

    @Berton, I am using a laptop!
    That will not prevent use of a Self-powered Hub with several ports on it, except for the portability part which only the user can determine. I keep such a Hub in my vehicle 'just in case'.

    Not so......you can get a WD My Personal Cloud NAS. You can get one with no drives (add your own) for $150 or with a 4 TB drive for $320.

    Clearly I need to do some more market research if prices are indeed that low!
