    Cloned a drive successfully, now cannot disable the old drive?


    I cloned my storage drive successfully. But now I cannot disable that drive in Device Manager. The option is just not there.


    The drive (J) originally had my windows paging file on it, and Disk Management refused to change the drive letter after I had cloned it. I had to use a program (EaseUS Partition Master) to change the drive letter. I set the new drive to letter J:\ without issue and re-set the paging file on that drive. The old drive I changed to letter I:\


    But now I cannot disable the I:\ drive. The only other drive I cannot disable is my OS drive. The I:\ drive used to be an OS drive many years ago. If there are any Windows files or components on it, they are most likely deeply hidden or in the Reserved partition, which the new J:\ drive also has. But the J:\ drive has the option to be disabled.


    how do I disable the I:\ drive?

    Think you've answered yourself. Part of essential OS files are still on that drive. Picture from drive management would help a lot

    Something else to consider, ran into a similar issue when adding an internal drive, did a reset of Win10 and it pick up an entry in the BIOS [older computer] about the AHCI setting that included RAID, required both drives staying connected to enable booting. Removing one drive didn't work, just a clean reinstall with only one drive connected.

    Could be (about RAID), but think not. My guess is pretty much what OP described... Restore partition could be left on old drive.

    You can check which one system uses (that's why I would like to see Disk manager) by typing this as admin

    reagentc /info
    I would take the old drive out, and make system bootable and working. Format the old drive after...

    the I:\ drive (Disk 1) is the one I'm trying to disable. The J:\ drive (Disk 4) is the newly cloned one. Disk 2 is my OS boot drive and Disk 3 is Driver X.

    Disk 1 used to be the J:\ drive.

    Your pagefile is on Drive I:. That is why you cannot disable it. Windows, internally, uses the UUID of the partition to identify where the pagefile (and other functions such as recovery) reside. You can change drive letters all you want, but the UUID will not change. You need to manually move the pagefile to J: drive, which will actually change the UUID of the pagefile location.

    I would also recommend you delete the system reserved partitions on disks 1 and 4.

    I don't know why it's doing that, I already manually re-set the paging file to go on the J drive already. For some reason it re-sets the paging file to the I:\ drive again

    If you cloned the drive, J: and I: may very well have the same UUID. You might need to manually change the UUID of one of the partitions.
