Other brands and even other SanDisks do work

Thanks. This is challenging. I do have several SanDisks and other brands, and all work. I even have another 256 GB SanDisk that works fine on my Win10/64.

Manyt hanks to Berton. I seem to have accidentally solved the problem. My new Lenovo AIO has five USB ports, all 3s I think. When I plugged in my 256 Sandisk flash, the computer froze and would not respond to any prompts except rebooting. Reformatting the flash stick didn't work. In fact, I bought a 500G Samsung external hard drive to take its place.

But today I plugged a camera memory card into the computer for the first time, via a USB, and it froze again. Then I tried a different USB port--and it worked. I have 4 ports in the back and one on the side. The one on the side worked--and it worked with the previously problematic thumb drive.

Can't explain it. I need to research the properties of all the ports on this computer. So for now that's my solution and my recommendation to anyone with a USB problem. Try every port on your machine first, before you panic.
    Thanks again.
