Does an external hard disk, e.g. WD Elements, has to stand upright?

Their logos are oriented the same way.
    Sorry, what does that mean?

Be careful how you handle those drives whilst running. I was using a Seagate USB drive recently which dropped a few inches from the armrest on my sofa onto the seat. This broke the drive losing all backups - the drive is clicking and doesn't show in Windows. I can't understand why they generally use a plastic housing when a metal enclosure would aid cooling.

While it was running, I assume. Yes, the slilghtest bumper might be sufficient to break it.

Because it is cheaper, I would say. A metal enclosure would aid cooling? Why?

Yes, the drive was running when dropped. A metal enclosure is better to aid heat flow by conduction and improved heat radiation from the surface of the enclosure.

I hope, the plastic enclosures are enough for a sufficient cooling, they are designed to do it. But it does not seem to be like that (see the link f14tomcat posted: t's Fine To Mount Hard Drives On Their Side Or Even Upside-Down - Stephen Foskett, Pack Rat): "Amusingly, most external USB drives from the “big names” definitely do not have sufficient airflow for adequate cooling!"

Simple, a company puts their logo/name on a product and it is intended to be oriented in a manner/direction that it can be read, usually upright like reading a book.
