Ever since I can remember I ejected a disc by right-clicking and getting the window shown in my screenshot below. I hit "Eject" and get the "safe to remove" return. Usually with a thumb drive. I never accessed the tool tray to get the icon in your message. Now that I see that option to eject, I'll use it.

Yanking my EHD without ejecting is likely (hopefully) the reason for the error that caused my concern.

Thanks for the responses. Yes, this is a USB drive. It's plug & play and there is no "eject" option hence no "safely remove hardware".

Nowadays, the system should set up external drives ready for disconnection without eject being used. Look in [right-click on the Start button,] Device manager, Disk drives, select each external drive, Policies tab.

You should see that your external drives are set to Quick removal by default.
