Using different ram capacity on a laptop along with stock ram

I have a alienware 15 r3 and would like to upgrade the ram, Can i find a 16gb stick with the same specs and add that to the single channel of 8gb that is already in it? Ive done this without caring in older machines but never on a newer gaming laptop. if i can get a general okay from the community Id open up the laptop and find the exact model of ram unless a windows utility can find the rams model and brand and then see if theres a very similar stick but in a 16gb form. If this will be a pain or potentially full of issues then id imagine a 16gb kit is the next best option.

Saw crucial, seems like they would be a good brand but their page doesn't say anything about adding it to a preexisting 8gb.

Look again. Those modules are what are compatible with your laptop. You buy the stick and then install. Your stick that is in there is going to be a standard DDR4 as listed for the spec’s for it on Dell’s website for the Product ID of the laptop.

Easy to check/replace ram on that laptop:

Remove base first, six screws. See manual: https://www.dell.com/support/manuals...5ed&lang=en-us

Edit: Sent the debugmode txt files to them. See what they come up with.

wmic memorychip list full in cmd.exe will also give you full details without some third party software. Same as msconfig system report.
