New USB media hub showing as removeable in Windows 10, cannot change

    SYSTEM DETAILS:
    Mobo: GIGABYTE 970A-DS3P (rev 2.0 I think)
    RAM: 32GB DDR3 @ 1600Mhz
    OS: Windows 10 Pro (x64)
    GFX: NVIDIA GTX 1060 (6GB)
DRIVES: 250GB Samsung 840 Evo, 1TB, 2TB Seagate Barracuda "Compute" both new and a 3TB Seagate Barracuda (recycled drives from upgrading one of my NAS servers)

So I recently purchased a new media hub that has many drive ports and 2 USB3 ports that I have tied directly in to an extra USB3 socket on the same card as the one attached to my board is taken by the USB3 ports built in to the chassis of my PC. This hub has data card slots for SD cards, TF/microSD cards and M2 cards. I am getting in to photography and was tird of constantly using USB convertors for my SD cards and microSD cards, besides, the direct link between the cards and the board has drastically improved data transfre speeds by as much as 4 times! I purchased this device as it also has a read out on its little LCD display for the CPU temperature, but was not so sure that installing it between the CPU and heatsync was a good idea as I could potentially destroy the sensor in it. so I use it instead to show me the temperature of the inside of the chassis, and surprisingly it is reasonably accurate to within 1 or 2°C.

My issue is that the media hub's drive letter "H" is for some reason detected as a "portable device" when it should be similar to the boards USB ports and not "removable". I have done a lot of research in to this including the device ID's and the other more technical info buried in device manager. I was unable to get the system to detect this hub as an internal device that is permaneantly attached to the system. Does anyone know of a way to do this? Here is a screenshot that mauy help you decide what I could do to achive what I am trying to do.

That would be correct. Since that device plugs into the USB port, it will always be a removable and has always been a removable type device. It cannot be changed.

I think you misunderstand me... the actual hub is detected as removable, I don't mean the USB drive itself...

Nope. It is doing as it is supposed to. It will always show up as a removable device because of the changes to how Windows 10 handles USB devices. Hubs have always been “Removable”, even if they are plugged directly to the motherboard or a daughter board.

Funny, as the USB hub that is attached to my board directly as this one is on its unternal ports "USB1" are not showing as removeable. I dont think I can say it in a way that is understood here except this...

I have a GIGABYTE 970AA-DS3P board, and it has 2 sets of USB headers, one, labelled as "USB1" on the board is used for the case USB 2.0 ports, which I can directly connect 2 USB devices to such as USB drives or my phone for example.

The second USB header labelled as "USB2" is what I have connected my card readers to, and while it works, and functions correctly, it should not show as removeable. Am I missing something?

The device I have did not come with a CD that would usually contain drivers.

Again with the changes to how Windows 10 handles USB device, a Hub that is not a part of the motherboard, will appear as a removable device. That means Daughterboards, attached to a connection point on the Motherboard with a cable, it will come up as Removable. Not that hard to understand how this works.

Here's mine: I have a 5.25" card reader mounted in one of my 5.25" bays that uses a USB header connection to connect to a USB header on my mobo. While the device is physically connected to the mobo it's still a portable drive. As it shows up in my device manager under the "Portable" tab as D, E, F and H drives. When I open file explorer, it's not shown at all (as it should, being portable). If I open the view tab and tick the box "hidden items" then they show up but not showing as portable.

This is how windows handles the USB devices as bro67 has pointed it out. It seems counter intuitive but it's not.

What I am trying to do is have it so it does not show up as a removeable drive on the system, like a USB drive would. I mean, I expect a drive to show when inserted, but not when it is empty, showing it as though it was a USB drive but with no data in. This will avoid me accidently ejecting the drive and having to restart the system.

I have 2 USB HDDs [2TB and 4TB] attached to my main computer with drive letters assigned in Disk Management, still show as removable even though they never have been removed. I also have a drive dock attached and with a drive in it shows the dock as removable, not the drive itself.

That will not happen, same as with USB drives. mHubs are seen as a removable decide when plugged into a USB interface.
