Looking at userbenchmark.com, a single RX580 is approximately equivalent to a GTX 1060. It is much superior to 1050ti. I don't know how much gain is achieved by two RX580s in Crossfire. (As regards VRAM, if Crossfire is like nVidia's SLI, the effective RAM is that of a single card; duplicate textures are loaded onto each card.)

Hi all

Well thanks for all your replies but I'm afraid I can't do anything about them at all other than respond. The reason is costs. I've just checked for some idea on what it would cost to upgrade his PC but we're talking about close to £1000 for just a graphics card (GTX1080 over£800) plus a better CPU (his current CPU is an i5-7600). Just an i7-8700 is nearly £300 and in addition we'd need to get another mobo and faster memory plus we're having our bathroom redone, we have a serious conservatory roof leak and we found out tonight that we have a hot water and heating problem. Possibly all big money jobs -- and we're pensioners!!! As far as I'm concerned we may as well end this thread here. Nevertheless thanks for trying to help.

Try Train Simulator 2019. I find it's a much smoother ride than Trainz.

A 1050TI should work OK on medium settings, without too much of a problem on newer versions and be fine on older ones, nothing wrong with the processor either, an i5 7600 is fine and 8GB of ram is plenty.
TRS19 and TANE are 64 bit programs and are GPU intensive, the CPU isn't that critical, TS12 and older are 32 bit and are CPU intensive and hardly use the GPU.
There is probably a simple reason that it's taking a long time to load. However without knowing which version of Trainz and it's build your husband has and not having a crystal ball I can't say.
Common causes of slow loading are:
All versions: Interference from on access scanning by AV and Antimalware programs. The average Trainz routes has thousands of files to load and this can be slowed down by Windows Defender and other AV's scanning each one as it's loaded.
TS12 latest build, database validation being carried on in the background, a rather annoying feature.
TS12 and older not having directx9c installed, DX10, 11 and 12 are missing files and are not 100% backwards compatible.
TRS19 and TANE having Physx enabled, turning it off improves things for many, it doesn't work properly yet anyway.
TRS19 having the Draw distance on 15,000 metres is a killer for anything under a GTX1080 in most cases 5,000 metres is fine and you won't notice it.
