I wouldn't worry too much about D: drive considering what it is being used for. But automatic optimization should be turned on, scheduled for weekly.

As @Samuria pointed out, your backup method is not really the best, especially for an SSD as the backup drive.

I second what @Samuria says. Hot cloning is not the correct backup approach. If you get malware or file corruption, you just clone it.

Why not just make regular image backups eg regular full backup say once a week, and differential backups daily, you can keep a snapshot record of pc over a period (and backup these to an external drive preferably).

TThat way if you get infected and do not detect it for a day or so, you can wind back to a previous version.

Image backups are more flexible and robust and you can have multiple versions backed up. Hot cloning only allows one copy of pc.

I'm curious about the total amount of data that the OP wants to backup.

For me, I do a 500 GB full image backup every single day with Macrium using two NVMe SSD's.
Total time with verification is 35 minutes. Schedule the backup and when complete, auto shut down.

No user intervention required unless there's a problem.
