Each ssd will need a power connector and a sata connector. If I am not mistaken there are 3 sata ports on that machine.

yes you are correct, I have 3 one is the primary drive and the other is the optical drive. I only have one power connector right now so I will have to get a Y splitter for that.

Would it be possible to make a NVMe ssd through the PCIe slot on a dell OptiPlex 960 sff? I have the slot but don't know if the the bios would support a boot drive of that nature. Or should I just convert my HDD to a 2.5inch SDD instead?
Here is the solution. I have a few of them. Excellent quality and performance. The NVMe mounts directly on the board.

x4 PCI Express to M.2 PCIe SSD Adapter | HDD Adapters | StarTech.com

Verify with Startech's Technical Support, first.

    Hope this helps!

    One more thing...

They offer another model that can accommodate two NVMe's. Don't do it. The bus bandwidth is split between them.

okay thank you for your help, my old PC won't boot from that but I should be able to use the PCIe slot for extra storage.

Speak with Startech about the boot.

His bios won't have the nvme module.

I don't think startech will be able to do anything about that.
