I think another option would be to switch the CPU I have from a Q9550 to the Q9650, my system does support it and I have the correct fan and heatsink to support it. I can get the Q9650 for pretty cheap. Here is the info I found to support the 960sff

Yes, Q9650 is shown in the manual I linked to earlier.
However, the difference is very small. I am not sure it is worth £30-40.
    Intel Core2 Quad Q9650 vs Q9550

I would get the ram, because it is very, very cheap. And the ssd , because that can always be moved to another machine.
My reasoning is that similar ivybridge machines can be had for about £122 in the UK. Wait 6 months and they will be cheaper still. That is a massive upgrade from what you are using now and you can transfer the ssd to it.

    For example:

    Another example:
    This is even cheaper £75.
    Dell Optiplex 7010 SFF i5-3470 3.20GHz 4GB RAM 320GB HDD Win 10 | eBay

add another 4gb ram for £8. Total £83.

lol, I don't know what I will do. I have not been into PC's for a bit and last week my PCU took a crap and I replaced it and now I have an urge to upgrade it a bit. I know its and old system but its what I have and I'm more or less just playing around. I've never replaced a CPU and thought it would be fun to do so. I will most likely just put a SSD drive in it.

    Hi,
Only requirements to installing on a m.2 is disabling CSM and enabling secure boot and uefi boot only
Have the basic m.2 driver on flash drive in case the 10 installer can't see the m.2 and go from there
Doubt it's a good idea to transfer an existing install to a m.2 although it's worth trying I suppose.
The existing install being a hdd I would lean to clean installing to it.

2.5" samsung 860 evo's are dirt cheap and a lot easier to deal with and for the most part not all that much slower and sure as heck aren't as hot as m.2 get.

Not practical on that old socket 775. Bios mod likely to be tricky, and no spare pcie slots. Sata ssd will be ok, but surely it is time for an upgraded machine - good bargains to be had as I linked already.

That is better value than wasting on cpu ugrades and graphics cards for the old machine.

MY preference would be a DT version of 7010 or similar - though they are obviously larger than SFF, there is more expansion potential.

okay thanks guys i'm going to order a small Samsung evo 860 just and use my old 1tb hdd for picture storage. If I get a cheap deal on a Q9650 I might buy just to say that I have replaced a CPU.

    I'm going to buy this

so I can mount a small SSD to run the os and day to day functions and would love to install a second 2.5 hdd for mass storage that way both can mount in the factory dell 3.5 hdd caddy. What cables will I need?

as far as I am seeing is that I will need a sata power splitter and according the manual I have an extra sata drive stot on the mother board.

Each ssd will need a power connector and a sata connector. If I am not mistaken there are 3 sata ports on that machine.
