USB-C stopped working with data and audio

    Hello all,

I'm not exactly sure when the problem started but it was soon after I updated to version 1903. My USB-C port has stopped working with data and audio. No mass storage device or USB-C audio device will work anymore. It will still charge a device but that's all it will do. My pc is an HP G2 Pro running Windows 10 Pro. I have tried removing all the USB devices in device manager and re-booting, updating the BIOS and fiddled with all the USB settings like enabling or disabling the Power Management. Attempting to update drivers just gets me the "the best drivers for your device are already installed" message. I'm completely stumped and Google has not been my friend with this particular issue. I discovered the issue while attempting to install a new rom on one of my Android phones and ADB would not detect the device. Plugging in a USB A to C cable into a standard USB-3 port worked so that sent me down this rabbit hole! Thanks.

Edit: I also tried to rollback the drivers but that option is greyed out and unavailable even when I'm logged in as an admin.

how about the cable you are using got damaged ? did you try another ? btw cables may have several wires inside , one broken may allow it to charge but not act as a data cable .

also how about the device you are connecting received the wrong driver ? do you hear the sound of device plugging in first place ? does the hardware show in device manager under any category ?

there is also the possibility you have damaged the port , it is said to be possible as there is an undergoing rumor that new samsung otg capable devices may randomly try to charge connected devices thinking its a dead phone which may result in frying of port controller chip .

Hi, Thanks for the reply. I tried several cables and adapters. All the devices work properly when plugged into a standard usb port and connected with an A to C cable. I suspect it's a software related issue but can't really say for sure. All the devices I've recently connected had all worked fine prior to the 1903 update. I can't say for sure it was the update either, just that post update it stopped working. So I suppose I also can't rule out that the port has failed for whatever reason.

can you at least rule out that in device manager the plugged in is sensed in any way ? like even with an exclamation mark ?

what is the mfg and model of the computer? You need to reinstall the driver.

I mentioned that in my OP. I also said I have tried removing the USB devices and re-installing them to no avail. I also said Windows 10 says I have the "best" driver and won't allow me to roll the driver back even when logged in as an admin.

It's not sensed. That is the problem. No mass storage devices are picked up. External hard drive, flash drive or mobile phone. The phones will charge but that's it. All the devices work properly when plugged into a standard USB3 port.

Windows 10 Recovery Tools - Bootable Rescue Disk try using windows rescue disk found here and boot through it and test , if plugged in hardware are still not sensed there may lay the possibility the port or its controller chip got damaged , if not then we continue the trouble shoot .
P.S i sincerely hope you havent messed up the bios earlier or turned off any ports through it , as a precaution i would suggest you restore bios defaults along the path

I hadn't made any changes to the BIOS prior to the failure. I did upgrade the BIOS in the hopes that it might fix the problem, which it did not. I might try your suggestion at another time but for now I am throwing up the white flag and surrendering. It's just not worth the effort right now.

    Thanks for the input though.
