    install from iso problem

I am trying to instal win 10 onto an empty SSD drive in my laptop (thinkpad).
The iso is on a usb drive.
It starts the install but when I get to the drive it says......

"windows cannot be installed on drive 0 partition 1, setup does not support configuration of or installation to disks connected through a usb"

The drive is not connected through usb it is in the laptop drive bay. How can I fix it?

You should be installing to empty (unallocated) disk space, not, apparently, an existing partition.

As part of the procedure for a clean install you are offered the option to format the target drive, for example.

If you are doing a clean install to an internal disk, you should create a bootable disk, and boot your PC from that.

MS's media creation tool can readily create a bootable disk for you.

in addition beware that if you have UEFI enabled in bios the bootable USB format has to be Fat32 and not NTFS , in case you cant manage to create a bootable Fat32 setup flash drive then disabling UEFI option in bios might be your only option .

Thanks- having a look into those suggestions.

I have just noticed that the drive that it says it can't install to is the usb drive that has the win10 iso on it that I am installing from. The destination ssd is not showing.

    History please:
    - is the SSD new?
    - have you just installed it?
    - was it working before?
    Thanks.

If you boot to BIOS, is it visible? See:
Fixed: BIOS Not Detecting SSD in Computer - Driver Easy

Try booting your PC using a boot disk created from this iso (e.g. using Rufus or other means):
    Toolkit Item: Kyhi’s Rescue Disk – Win10.Guru

    Then run Minitool Partition Wizard.

    Does it show your disk?

The SSD is not new and has been working with win 10 in the laptop I am trying to install it on again.
I formatted it to NTFS in Minitool Partition Wizard.
I am using booting from disk made in Rufus.

Try using a bootable disk created using the MS media creation tool, assuming build 1903 is ok for you.

That avoids all the problems that might arise using Rufus options.

I'm probably being too literal minded, but normally Win10 would be installed by extracting an .iso onto a bootable USB drive.

I guess that you could copy the .iso to the drive and mount it (natively in Win8 or Win10). You may be able to use that to install onto an SSD (that isn't the OS drive). I have never done that.

Could you be a little clearer about what you are doing?

Please create Kyhi's bootable disk and see if you can boot your PC from that, and then access the SSD.

Please also confirm that if you boot to BIOS you can see that the SSD is shown there.

Are you using legacy BIOS (MBR) or UEFI?

    Clean Install Windows 10
Please confirm that at 11 you chose 'Custom'.
Please see sections 13,14 and advise what choices you made when clean installing Win 10.
