'Add a printer' dialog crashes immediately

If I click 'Add a printer' in Control Panel, a window flashes on the screen then immediately closes. If I click 'Add a printer or scanner' from the Settings application, the application hangs for a moment then crashes. I have tried this fix here: Upgrade to Windows 10 Can't Install Printer - Spiceworks from an identical laptop but to no avail.

    Specs:
    MSI GP62 7RD Leopard (laptop)
    i7-7700HQ
    16GB RAM
    GTX 1050
    Windows 10 Home 1809
    System drive: 128GB SSD
    Additional drive: 1TB HDD

    Thanks in advance.

Hi, to check if this might be a user profile issue, please create a new user for test purposes, log in as that user, and retry that. Post the result.

If you see the same thing, I suggest you head straight for an in-place repair install which keeps all progs, data and most settings for which you will need an 1809 iso.

You can get one if you search for and use
    Hedoc iso downloader

You could also first try the print troubleshooter:

    Thanks for your help dalchina.

I tried a lot of things.
    • Troubleshooter
    • Admin account
    • New account
    • sfc: first run was unable to fix some corrupt files. Ran DISM, and another sfc reported successful repair. A third run of sfc said no integrity violations were found.
    • Updated to 1903, then build 18362.239 and still no success.
    • Rolled back to the original 1903 update and did the in-place repair install. Still no fix, exactly the same issue.
    • Updated back up to 18362.239.

This is a bit mental haha, I have no idea what's going on.

Does 'Add a device' work properly?

Given that Add a Printer scans through available devices, it may be that corruption in that data is causing this.

You could try rt clicking, click Troubleshoot. for each printer listed in that dialogue under 'Add a device'

    Also see

    for an idea.

Do you have programs installed that that have added printers e.g. print to PDF?

None of those things worked. I uninstalled PDFtoolkit and PDF creator, restarted, and same situation. I discovered "Advanced printer setup" link on the Hardware and Sound section of Control Panel also has the same behaviour.

Thank you very much for your reply.

Again, does 'Add a Device' exhibit the same behaviour?
Please post a screenshot like this:

To post a screenshot please use the Insert Image icon above your post.

Note that Add Printer is available in Safe Mode in Settings (which I don't think should be the case) and using that causes the whole Settings dialogue to close. Just a thought. (The CP options aren't available which is what I'd expect).

It seems unlikely to be Windows corruption given you've tried an in-place upgrade repair, so suggests some setting or driver is interfering.

    Thank you for your reply.

My guess would be your 'configuration database' is corrupt in some manner.
