Those errors means that it is not detecting your CD/DVD drive. Time to replace since they are pretty cheap these days.

The drive plays both audio and video discs ok, so I don't think the drive is to blame.

As was mentioned before, A drive can play but the recording function (lens) can fail. Drives are only not expensive.
Please tell us if you have a full size or a smaller thin tower.

I would look at an external burner. You can get them as low as $22 USD, or a Blu-Ray (BDR) for $78 USD starting.

The optics is the same for reading or burning, the main difference is the power of the laser diode is increased for burning purposes.
It is this functionality that may have failed, part failure of the drive.

That Dell PC was in several sizes of box, some had the Standard size Optical drives, some the slim line Laptop drive. Whatever you can still buy either.

Thank you Porthos It's the smaller, slim line one. Thank you for that eBay link. I've ordered one.

Yes, I noticed that, sorry not to have mentioned it. A very kind thing to do.

I bought that drive from eBay, but the system doesn't recognise the discs which it burnt.

I think it best to return it, unless any other remedies can be suggested.

What software are you using to burn. Did you close the session (finalize) What discs are you using?
