Windows 10 rebooting after waking from sleep with WOL magic packet

    Hi there

I've been looking around various places on the internet to try and find a solution to this problem but none have presented one yet so I thought I'd try here to see if anyone has encountered a similar one.

For years I have been using sleep mode in Windows 10 and waking it up either with WOL magic packets or from USB keyboard/mouse. But recently it has stopped successfully waking up and instead sits on a black screen for a few minutes and then forcibly reboots itself.

I have not added any new hardware recently other than a new PSU (Corsair CX750) but resume from sleep did work successfully for a while even after installation of this so I do not believe this is the issue. So far I have tried:

    Disabling Windows fast start up.
Disable hibernation (was never on anyway).
    Disabling eco mode for NIC.
Disabling power saving modes in BIOS
Updating BIOS (this did seem to temporarily solve it but then it reappeared)
    Updating Windows.
    Updating GPU drivers (Geforce 970).
Rolling back to older GPU drivers (also temporarily solved it but then reappeared)

I'm quite stumped. Does anyone have any ideas for things I haven't tried yet?

    Thanks in advance

    slick

oh yes i encountered that while building an accelerated intel driver once , this is the work of a poorly written driver "inf" file or one that became non compatible with the current build of windows you are on .

so whatever it is just try to upgrade to a latest geforce driver , if the manufacturer don't have any updated drivers for you , you might want to obtain a generic geforce driver on your own from geforce drivers download center by following these steps :

1 - know the version of your gpu and windows version and bit number

2 - search by them on nvidia geforce website , if driver version number or release date show higher version than what you have (in device manager under display adapter where you need to pick the nvidia geforce display driver and check its version number)

    3 - download the appropriate setup (64bit/32bit)

4 - uninstall the manufacturer's one and make sure you tick to delete the driver from drivers store as it tends to re-install itself minutes after

5 - install the one you downloaded from nvidia geforce download center , oh and to ease it up on yourself do unplug from the internet during as microsoft has its habit of fighting over and try to install whatever random older wddm driver from its online catalog while you are at it so you end up with theirs not yours .

The integrated Intel GPU driver? I'm fairly sure I have this GPU disabled in the BIOS so I can't even change it's driver without turning it back on.

Could it still do this while it's disabled in the BIOS?

    Ah right gotcha!

Yes, the Nvidia Geforce GPU drivers had been one of my previous ideas. I always update them as soon as new ones are available. New ones came out yesterday and after installing them the restart when wake from sleep problem still perissted.

I even tried a clean install of the drivers today and it has still not solived the problem.

for trouble shooting purpose please install the card vendor bundled driver (the bundled cd or on their website) and see if it works any better ?
P.S make sure you select No in System Properties > Hardware > Device Installation Settings

I installed the oldest available drivers from evgas site which were from 2015 and wake from sleep seems to work okay now.

So is the only solution to this going to be keep it on old drivers? This is my gaming machine too so that would not be ideal.

well try to upgrade to a latest driver without uninstalling or resetting settings of this one hoping that whatever dll responsible to fix this will stay in place .

Sadly no. I updated to the newest drivers and whatever DLL is the problem has been over-written and the problem returns. Seems like something I'll just have to live with if this is the only way to fix it. Can't be using those ancient drivers.
