Opening Task Manager causes sleeping hard drives to wakeup

    Win 10 x64 1903 build:18362.239

Opening Task Manager causes my sleeping disk drives to wakeup, not a problem, just annoying. I was thinking about submitting it via Feedback hub, but thought I'd submit a post here first.

Welcome to the forum. As it reports CPU and hard drive it's bound to wake it in order to get data

Normal behavior. Feedback on this will just give your ticket a closed status, since it is not a flaw hardware or OS wise.

Thanks all. I'm so used to looking in Task Manager for processes and CPU utilization, that I didn't think about it showing disk utilization, so that makes sense. I have it set to open to the "Processes" tab, not the "Performance" tab, so again, I didn't think about disk info being given.

No worries, was just curious why the drives would wake.

Tab has zero to zo with it. It is a waking process when opening a tool like Task Manager to get system and software information.

Since this is the top result on Google, I will point out my recently discovered solution: restore the classic Windows 7 task manager to Windows 10. It does not wake hard drives unlike the not-very-smartly-programmed Windows 10 task manager.

    tm_cfg_win8_win10.zip from win7games.com/#taskmgr

    Disclaimers:
    • Use at your own risk.
    • It is third-party, so not an officially Microsoft-approved solution.
    • I have only tested it on LTSC 2019 (v1809) which does not have automatic feature updates. If you're using regular Windows 10, it is possible some later update could cause incompatibilities.
    • It is not open source unfortunately, and like any closed source software one can never say with 100% certainty it is safe.
    • Always scan zip files and executable files with an anti-virus before you open/run them. I have scanned both the zip file and the installer executable inside it using an online scanner (I used virustotal.com), and you should do so too and make your best judgment.
