Ooops...I think I have messed up my ssd.

OK, totally my bad on this one.

In a dozy state....[note to self - don't mess with computers before the first coffee]

I plugged an SSD into the motherboard SATA power and data cable while the computer was on. Now it is being weird, I have reformatted the drive and tried a test install of Win10 but it Blue screens ( I cannot remember the issue )and won't allow installation....I also tried linux and that came up with installation errors, just to make sure it wasn't a corrupt installation usb.

I suspect I have corrupted some data. The drive is a cheap Kingston 120GB so I am not going to sweat over it too much and no data was lost. The question is.......

Is there a way to partition out the bad data locations or are these thing dynamic? Basically, can the SSD be rescued in some way? The drive comes up in Disk manager with 111GB so that's ok....

I have a test rig I can use to dig into it and run some tests.

    Any advice appreciated.

    All the best

    First Drink that coffee
Second turn off your machine and check your connections
third try a New Clean install, Meaning delete all partitions and letting
the installer to re partition and format how it wants.
I recommend downloading a new iso from the uudump and making a new usb
installer as your present one might be corrupt .

    Thanks Thomaseg1

Third coffee ,.....and set up the SSD in the test rig. The drive is was wiped and it's current state is 111.79gb unallocated data. I have used a new Win10 iso (aswell as some linux mint and Neon) all fresh downloads and the bootable usb was create by Window creation tool (I used Rufus for Linux).

Win10 install is let to get on with it on a non-partitioned drive. It seems all is fine and dandy until it read/writes to the SSD. I guess I have learnt an indirect lesson about hot swapping SSD.

I will experiment with partitions, but, I do not know if I will be wasting my time.

The SSD is not system critical as it was used as a scratch disk before - I am using the Win10 installation to see if it works on that drive, it will be deleted afterwards and not used in any way.

OK, so clean installing didn't work on the test rig.....I have put the SSD in the main WIn10 PC, deleted the volume, created a new volume and copied around 95gb on to the drive, which copied over OK. So the disk works?

Now it's got me on a mission why it won't let install an OS either Windows or Linux on that SSD.

    Any ideas?

Is Test Rig HDD Mode setup as AHCI in the Bios?

It's quite an old MB and the SATA is set to IDE.

During my troubleshooting on the test rig, I went minimal hardware and it seems like there was some failing RAM ( 8GB ) I took it out and the O/S was installed......

....I wonder if this was just a coincidence with the Hot Swap SSD hiccup.....it seem the drive is fine or at least it's running.
