How do I get Win.10 to recognize a USB plug-in?

The first thing I have to say is I don't know a chipset from a football. I have a Dell inspiron. I am trying to load Datacolor Spyder4 Elite monitor calibrator. I have tried loading it with the cd, and online with the latest update. When I load it, it says to keep the Spyder4 unplugged. After I load the program, it says to pick from the dialog below, however the list is blank, nothing to pick, and I cannot go further. I have gone to the device manager and when it is plugged in, it shows as a generic USB, not Spyder4 as it should. By the way I have loaded it on my Win.7 computer, and it works fine, no issues loading. I don't think this is an issue, but I use the same monitor for both PCS using a module. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

So you start the program, the first screen says to make sure the sensor is plugged in. So you plug the sensor in to a USB port, then click next. Then it says "Please select your sensor from the following dialog." Did you click the OK button? After you click the OK button, then you should get the drop down list with Spyder4 listed as an option.

I will try to go step by step. I download ver. 4.5 9.
    1. Setup has finished copying files to computer.
2.Plug Spyder in before launching Spyder4 Elite. I plug in Spyder
    3. click next
    4. I launch Spy.4 Elite. It says please select your sensor from following dialog. (Nothing in dialog to select)
    5. A window comes up that says no sensor detected, and below is Spyder4 ccp 156 131331(0x20103). I looked at there site and it had an error Ref.#1564807421 Error code 131331error message no sensor detected.

I don't have on of these things. The only other thing I can possibly suggest is to have the device unplugged. Restart the computer using the restart option on the power button menu. Then try plugging the device in to a different USB port. Preferably a black USB 2.0 port directly off the motherboard in the back of the computer. Can't help you much beyond that, sorry.

The Datacolor site only shows the "SpyderX" model. The "4" model must be an old one and as it works on Win 7 it may not be Win10 compatible????

What is the exact model of Dell?

An Amazon ad for your device shows it's compatible with Win XP, Vista and Win 7... so it's obviously quite old.

Try running the installer software in 'compatibility' mode.

    1. Right-click on the installer executable file and choose Troubleshoot compatibility.

    2. Once the troubleshooter has examined the executable file, select the Try recommended settings option:

    3. Follow any recommendations.

    Hope this helps...

I tried every recommendation without success. I installed it on my laptop which runs windows 10, and it installed fine.

If it installs on your Win 10 laptop OK then, on your Inspiron 3668 tower, look in Device Manager after you plug the device in. What do you see? (It should recognise the device but show an error as no driver has been loaded.)

Is this your post here - Spyder4Elite loads on Win 7, but not on Win 10

Anyway it's still a mystery as to why that puck isn't working under Windows 10, but does under 7. And as some have noted at the other forum, their puck works just fine under 10, so to me, it seems something weird is going on with the PC itself.

BTW for those trying to troubleshoot this, there are two components to this issue - software, which installs fine; the hardware (colorimeter - aka puck), which is not being recognized by any of the USB ports under Windows 10. Thus the issue is the hardware (puck).

I note that the hardware manufacturer's web site shows a Spyder4 driver download under legacy products. It's dated 2014, i.e. ja year before Win 10 was released.

Could it be that there's a hardware driver seperate from the calibration software installer?
