USB 2.0 doesn't work on my computer

Hello, first of all I apologize for my English (I'm from Barcelona). I will make the effort to explain the problem to you to see if it is understood.

I have a laptop ASUS S200E from 2013. It has two USB 2.0 ports and one USB 3.0 port. The 2.0 ports stopped working and only the USB 3.0 devices work on port 3.0. The 2.0 devices connected to the USB 3.0 port do not work.

After many tests I decided to format the disk and reinstall windows 10 (I used to have windows 8.1). The problem remains the same.
Starting the PC with Linux Live USB there is the same problem with USB.

In device manager, without any USB plugged in, when I start the PC the following error is displayed:

Unknown USB device (Device descriptor request error)
Windows stopped this device because it reported problems. (Code 43)

Error in a request for the USB device descriptor.

I have a DJ mixer with a USB 2.0 device that does not recognize it if I plug it in. But if I boot the PC and it is plugged into the USB 3.0 port it does recognize it. But I can not connect it in a external HUB because then it does not recognize it. Therefore I can only connect one device.

If I suspend the PC and wake it up, the external hard disk connected in USB 3.0 does not recognize it, it always recognizes it after a reboot.

I think there is a fault in the hardware that gives the error at the beginning, what I would like is to see if I can deactivate something so that I do not get that error and can use at least the USB 3.0 port normally and connect an external HUB to can plug in more devices. Above all USB 2.0 devices.

I have already disabled in the device manager the USB 2.0 ports of the computer, so there is no way to make them work.

Greetings and I hope you understand the problem

    Thank you

    Welcome to the Forum
If the problem was under Win 8, still on Win 10 and Linux, you have a chip hardware failure.
Open BIOS and see if there is any settings related to USB ports.

hello! Thanks @Megahertz, I hope this answers your question:

In Bios -> Advance -> USB Configuration:

Legacy USB Support -> [Enabled] (Enables Legacy USB support. AUTO option disables legacy support if no USB devices are connected. DISABLE option will keep USB devices available only for EFI applications)

XHCI Pre-Boot Mode -> [Enabled] (Pre-Boot Modeof operation of XHCI controller. Enable this option if you need USB 3.0 support in DOS. Please note that XHCI controller will be disabled if you set this item as Disabled)

This two settings are related only to the way you want to boot (Legacy or UEFI)

BIOS has its own USB drivers. Try to attach a mouse to one of the USB ports and enter BIOS. Does the mouse works when you're on BIOS?

The mouse doesn't work in any of the ports because it is a USB 2.0 device and it does not work in the BIOS either. In the BIOS, it behaves in the same way. Only hard drives or USB 3.0 pen drives work on the USB 3.0 port

    Hi there
    @nestre

USB 2 Mice / keyboards will almost certainly work on USB 3 ports -- even USB 2 HDD's will work on USB 3 ports - although only at USB 2 speed.

Other way round should work as well -- USB 3 devices will normally (not always though) work on USB 2 ports.

I suspect you've got a hardware problem -- check to see if USB ports connected / seated properly on Mobo and ensure you haven't set any things like mechanical dip switches etc to disable USB 2 functionality.

However if the mobo won't boot USB 3 devices (that only happens on old hardware where USB 3 was introduced later) then you've had it if the USB 2 functionality doesn't work even at BIOS level -- time for a new Mobo I suspect. This might be cheaper than a new machine although Amazon have some really good deals on re-furbed machines -- you can always cannabalize HDD's and Monitor etc from your old machine. !!

    Cheers

Normally the USB is controlled by the chipset. And I can say that the USB controller is damaged.
You didn't gave your hardware specs but I suspect that your MB it's an old model
On old models, the USB 2.0 is controlled by the chipset of the MB (that is damaged) and the USB 3.0 is controlled by a dedicated chip, like the Marvell chip. This USB 3.0 will only work after the OS is working as it needs a dedicated driver.
Under Windows or Linux your USB 3.0 port should work normally with USB 2.0 or 3.0 devices.

    Hi @jimbo45 @Megahertz

    Thanks for the help

It does not work on the PC any USB 2.0 device (mice or keyboards) does not recognize them. In the two USB 2.0 ports nothing works, it is as if they did not exist. Only USB 3.0 devices work on the USB 3.0 port. The computer is an ASUS S200E, I have opened it and physically no bad connection is seen. The MOBO apparently does not present any bad connection.

you believe that changing the MOBO would solve the problem. Do you know any trusted place where I can buy it?

Do you think it's easy to change it alone? Once installed the computer will work? or do you have to program something? the BIOS will already be scheduled?

Replacing a motherboard on a laptop is some task......probably easier and maybe cheaper to buy a new laptop ( a bit of a layout just for working usb's though ).

While not aesthetically pleasing, your USB hub from the working USB3 port may have to be the workaround.
