USB memory stick issues

No Megahertz I did not. I tried using HPUSBDISK, it would not work when installed in the PC, but it did work in the laptop. The USB stick still works perfectly in the laptop, but I cannot transfer or delete files from it in the PC. In the PC disk manager lists it as being valid and working properly, and in File Explorer it exists and I can see the files that it contains, and finally in Device manager it is also listed as working properly. In Disc manager I have deleted it, rebooted, and allowed Windows to detect and reinstall drivers with no change. Any other USB memory stick that I have works fine, using the same USB port in the PC.

So that is my progress, none.

Let's try this.
Insert the USB stick on the desktop. Open disk manager, delete ALL partitions - create new partitions and format as default. As it has 128G should be NTFS.
Sorry, I can't think anything else to do.

With the PC I deleted all partitions, I created a new partition assigned a drive letter and a label and selected format. after a long time a message appeared saying that Windows cannot format it. I plugged it into the laptop and it no longer showed up in File Explorer, it did appear in Disk Manager with a notice that the partition was unallocated. I asssigned a drive letter and label and formatted it with no problem using the Wizard. it works in the laptop but the same problem in the PC persists. Windows reports that the USB exists and there are no problems, but if I try to copy a file from the USB or add a file to it the same thing happens. I see the transfer bar shoot immediately to 49% and stop, if I then look at more 'details' it knows that all I am doing is transferring a 1 Mb file because it reports the size, but it says that it is calculating the time to complete the transfer, which is infinite.

so with the PC Windows can see the USB, it reports that it is working properly but I cannot read or write to it. If I take it without making any changes at all and plug it into the laptop it works perfectly. As I have said I know that the USB port in the computer is fine because I tested it with other USB sticks.

In the specific link Fix Disk Is Write Protected Error in Windows 10 | Windows OS Hub he had given, you should check whether Current Read-only State is yes by running diskpart. If yes, and you do not want to clear the Read only attribute, that is upto you.

If it is a No, you can try
1. drive cleanup ( not a driver cleanup ) - see my post #7 here Must Assign Drive Letter Each Time I Swap Drives ( Suitable for a novice who does not want to manually edit the registry to remove all non-present USB devices)

and if it does not resolve the problem

2. Low Level formatting your Lexar pendrive (complete zero wipe) with HDD LLF Low Level Format Tool HDDGURU: HDD LLF Low Level Format Tool (suitable for a novice who does not want to run diskpart cleanall )

I am a novice. Reason why I use these two frequently to cleanup my registry and to wipe my storage devices.

If these two do not resolve the problem, then .....hmmm... I have no other ideas .

1) Disable write protect with regedit didn’t work because I cannot enter the path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\RemovableStorageDevices\{53f5630d-b6bf-11d0-94f2-00a0c91efb8b} in my PC. The reason is that the folder Removable Storage Devices does not exist.

2) With diskpart the attributes disk says that the USB is not read only (Current Read-only State: No, Read-only : No)

3) With the HDD LLF Low Level Format Tool I was unsuccessful because a message appears saying that the program is “unable to lock device” and a possible cause is that there are open files. That is not the case, the USB had been formatted in the laptop. Just to be certain I formatted the USB again in the laptop but used the longer process rather than a ‘quick format’. Same results.


I am a novice but it seems strange to me that the folder RemovableStorageDevices from step 1 does not exist in the PC or in the Laptop. Note I was running regedit in Administrator mode if that matters.

So here I am, the USB works flawlessly in the laptop but is essentially dead in the PC.
