External SSD and NVM / M2 ssd with adapter

    Hi there.

is there any advantage over using a bog standard SSD drive with SATA-->USB / USBC connector in using a NVM M2 type with the appropriate USB connector as external devices. The speed of the USB connection would be the limiting factor but other considerations e.g reliability etc. The M2 type devices are nice and small and are getting cheaper than the traditional SSD models now anyway so anybody used these as extenal devices yet -- e.g WindowstoGo / Linux / macrium backups etc etc.

    Cheers

Jimbo, I've used both standard SSDs and an NVM device in a small case. To my casual observation, the only real difference was the small size of the NVM device which I really liked. The device I was using also had a USB-C connection which I really like.

I was using the device for general storage and for running a few smaller VMs for test purposes with my Windows 10 system.

Other than the super convenient form factor, can't say I saw a difference.

    Hi there
Thanks for the observations -- I too like the smaller form factor and as now they are often cheaper than the classical SSD's - that's the deciding issue.

I've a few older standard SSD's if I need to replace disks in older computers -- I think modern laptops and mobos now all support NVM devices which IMO seems to be the way to go.

Marking thread as solved -- USBC connector with NVM does work blindingly fast for VM's, system backups and Windows to Go type systems !!!.

    Cheers
