USB 3 hub interferes with boot

With powered USB 3 hub plugged into power, Win 10 does not boot at all. Unplug power to USB hub (usb connections still there), boot is normal. Plug in power to USB hub after boot starts is fine. What is this? Thanks.

Hi Peter. Welcome to the TenForums @silversmith

Is anything attached to powered USB Hub? Anything that Windows might detect as a boot device.

What is your boot order set to in BIOS? Any chance USB devices are set as priority.

Thanks for the response. The USB hub preventing boot occurs even when there are no USB devices attached, as long as hub is plugged into power. With no external power to the USB hub, the boot is normal. After start of boot, plug in power is no problem. I tested other USB powered hubs in this machine - the same. When I use these same USB hubs with power in another WIN 10 machine, no problem, so it is not a faulty hub. Bios boot order does NOT contain USB boot. Any suggestions of how to configure Bios to allow powered USB hub greatly appreciated.

Is anything before Windows Boot manager in the BIOS boot priority, you said no to USB, how about network booting?

I should have asked this before.

Do all the machine use UEFI boot? Stated differently, do the machines that work boot UEFI or legacy?

I am very grateful for your interest.
Below are links to pics of my Bios screens. I welcome you to examine them and advise me if a change here can help.
    Thanks. Peter

I see the Load Legacy Option Rom is enabled is Bios 03 pic.

What does your manual say that does.

Have you compared that to other machines.

I don't see boot order at all. In that pic, Bios 03, what is behind select media driver window?

Manual says Legacy Option reserves 128Kb for PCIe cards. It also gives a stern warning not to disable, lest a system reinstall might be needed.
    USB Boot support is Disabled.
Under the Media Window says: 'Boot Option Priorities' - and under that 'Boot Option #1' which in turn is set to UEFI (only other option is to not use UEFI) .
    Your thoughts welcome!
    Many thanks.

Did a quick google and this seems to be a common issue. Would not have believe it.

Some talked to MB, other the boot order that I was thinking. One even suggested get a better hub.

Just for information. If you boot or restart and then hit f12 it should bring up the boot menu. What does yours look like?

So we need someone with Dell to chirp in.

In that list it says UEFI with legacy oprom enabled and the legacy option sure enough has network.

I still wonder if it is getting snagged on the network option.

So with the Powered USB plug in and you boot do you get any messages on screen? It would be a one liner.

This would be the real tell. Plug in the powered USB and power on machine. Hit F12. Cursor down to Windows boot manager. Press enter. See if it boots normally.
