    external HDD recognition problem

hardware spec: ryzen 2700X, ASUS PRIME B450_PLUS, Radeon RX570, 32GB RAM, 512GB Samsung SSD

    1. plugs my external HDD (USB3.0) while OS is running

    * file explorer recognizes drive, but when clicked, It takes an hour to load file list >> clicks any file, dir >> another hours >>...
    * devmgmt, diskmgmt, diskpart >> not responding

    2. boot with HDD plugged

    * even not showing login window.
    * unplug HDD >> shows login window, boot no problem.

cf. my external HDD has no problem such as bad sectors... when I plug my device to another PC, it works well.

I tried clean install, both version of Home/Pro(expected nothing), both old version and latest version of windows, M/B drivers installation, re-install USB 3.0 driver, power management setting... but same result.

    this is weird. anybody help?

    ps. sorry for bad english

Hi nexo. Welcome to the TenForums @nexo

On the desktop that doesn't work have you tried

    1) USB 3.0 port on rear of machine?

    2) USB 2.0 port on rear of machine?

Is your external drive powered through separate source or is it powered through USB voltage?

    How big is external drive?

Is it structured as MBR or GPT?

How current is your MB BIOS? Not saying to update it, just asking. From Asus site it appears to be current you also need new chipset drivers.

device is kinda external hdd "reader", so I use it to manage my SATA HDDs (many of them are 3TB~4TB) and of course it does use external DC voltage. and of course they are all GPT labled disk (i've checked it from another windows)
i've tested my device on my macbook pro, linux mint notebook, windows 10(Home, latest stable build) notebook, another windows PC (intel based)
it worked just fine. which means my device does not have any problem..

i'm not sure what "port on rear of machine" means.. but I checked every USB 3.0/3.1 type-A ports of machine (on PC case, on motherboard I/O ports..)

and then, I've been realized that I've never tried my device through USB 2.0 Port (since I was using them for keyboard/mouse input), so I plugged my device into 2.0 port, and it worked fine.

    <additional attempts>
i've downloaded and installed the latest driver from AMD/ASUS hp several times, I've clean installed my OS several times, even I've installed linux and tested my M/B does not have any physical problem on its USB 3.0 ports.
so it is clear that this problem comes from some unknown magical conflicts between my machine and windows (maybe USB 3.0 drivers)
    ...what should i do now?

    thanks for Kenny

You didn't say anything about your bios level and in turn the prereq to update chipset drivers.
