After Windows 10 1903 upgrade, SSD drive letter disappeared

Upgraded Windows 10 from 1809 to 1903. After upgrade, my Samsung SSD 840 EVO 500GB drive (S:) could not be found by File Manager. Disk Manager says "Disk 1 Unknown Not Initialized" so can't even assign a drive letter to it. Not a new drive, been using this SSD since 2015 and have gigabytes of data on it. I'm assuming doing an "Initialize" would wipe out all files? How can drive letter S: be assigned without destroying all my files?!

When I had a hard drive fail and go to "RAW" on me, I used this to recover it:
Active@ Partition Recovery restores deleted & damaged volumes & disks. Freeware Data Recovery Software Toolkit

You could also try the partition recovery feature of MiniTool Partition Wizard:

This is why we recommend keeping disk image backups using Macrium Reflect Free:

NavyLCDR thanks for the reply. I do in fact have a Macrium Reflect backup of the of the SSD drive so I did a restore and the SSD drive letter S: reappeared in File Explorer. Disk Manager no longer says "Disk 1 Unknown Not Initialized". Hopefully the links you posted will help those who experienced this problem and don't have a backup.
