    Portable Devices in Device Manager

When I go into Device Manager, click 'view', and check show hidden devices, I find portable devices that lists 20+ devices. Just looking at them tells me it occurs when I plug in a USB thumbdrive. My question is it okay to delete all of them? Is there an app or a cleanup function that's supposed to clean these up?

Yes, perfectly sate. If needed they will be reinstalled next time that usb is plugged in.

You could try Device Cleanup Tool from Tools for Windows

That seems to work for me and you can set it to remove all (non PnP) devices not just old USB.

Thanks for the utility. Downloaded and ran. Real nice.

Uwe Sieber's tools are truly awesome. It's worth spending some time poking around the site: Tools for Windows. Device Cleanup is terrific, but he's got lots of other good stuff, too.
