One of first symptoms of dead or dying solid state storage device is it going into read only mode. That's to protect data already on it. Try some 3rd party partitioning SW like Easus Partition master or Mini tool to kill all partitions and make a new one in appropriate file format. If that doesn't succeed it's most probably became unusable.
Problem is, when I go to Nikon's site to the section where the firmware upgrades are downloadable, it literally says with bold font and huge letters that: "Before performing the firmware update MAKE SURE to have the SD-Card formatted IN THE CAMERA. Failure to do so, could result in errors..blah blah blah" don't remember the exact wording, but they are basically warning users that not using a SD-CArd formated in the camera may brick the camera during the firmware update. So, what do you suggest me to do ?
I don't think you understand the problem. It doesn't make any difference if I use a cheap 2 or 4 gb sd-card or the one that I'm using now. If I format say an old 2gb IN THE camera as requested for the firmware upgrade, Win10 will not let me write on it. It's not the card. It's Win10 seeing it as "Read Only State:yes" in diskpart, no matter what I do. I will simply put the firmware file on a usb stick, and boot my old desktop machine with windows XP, that I don't use anymore, and then I will transfer the firmware file from the stick to the SD-Card. In XP there is no problem, reading and writing to these cards formatted in the camera. But I was wondering what exactly is going on with my Win10 laptop preventing me to write on some SD-cards like those formated in my Nikon D500.

Sure the sd card doesn't have a manual lock switch on the edge of it :/

10 has a nasty habit of always mounting drives not sure why 10 would set anything as read only unless a program was tying up the drive and causing a error in formatting the drive.

...and to make things even stranger, I have tried to connect the camera with the sd-card in it to the pc via usb cable. And in Explorer, I can see the card and I can navigate it, and if I right click in the sd-card explorer window , in the context menu I can select 'Copy' from the dropdown, but 'Paste' is greyed-out even though I previously copied the file from the PC.
Then, things are curios & curiouser :) I can format the SD-card in this way from my laptop, with the sd-card in the camera. But if I take it out still cannot write on it if I put it in the card-slot of my laptop. But in my laptop, being in read-only state, I cannot of course even format the card because I get "This disk is write-protected". Cannot delete partion, canoot 'clean' with diskpart, cannot do anything that involves writing to it.

ThrashZone: the SD-card HAS a lock switch on it.l tried it a dozen times to make sure it is in the unprotected position. I even tried to tape the portion to make sure that the sd-card slot in my laptop doesn't somehow push the switch back into write-protect mode due to friction.
If anyone is still looking at this thread the way I fixed it was by blowing into the slot {i dont know if this was necessary}
then i got a toothpick and poked at a little sliver thing on the left side of the sd card reader about 2 or 3 times then it started working again.
Good reminder of the reason to keep around a can of compressed air for the purpose.
Maybe that "silver" thing was a contact/pin that was a bit out of place. I'd keep an eye on that, I like having a pocketable/portable card reader around 'just in case'.
