Optical drive will not install

Toshiba Satellite laptop. New problem in the last few days. Windows 10 version 1809. Trying to send backup data to a flash drive, I noticed that the flash drive was labeled as 'D' instead of 'E' . Went to device manager, cd/dvd drive and saw this error for device status. "Windows cannot start this device because the configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged" (code 19). Is there a way correct this without trying system restore? Help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Try this free cautious repair tool, selecting only the relevant repair:

Also note you can allocate a removable drive a fixed drive letter in disk management- max 1 per drive letter. Use a letter late in the alphabet.

dalchina; Thank you for your input. I tried to find the free program (of course) but ended up downloading the program. After running it, showed over 900 errors but no fix without paying. over several days I kept playing with Windows repair saw no immediate success. Today I opened "my computer", & like magic, my optical drive was back. So your suggested idea must have worked. Thank you very much. I will now mark it as solved. Dick Robbins

Glad it's fixed. I think yo downloaded the wrong thing- what I suggested doesn't report lots of errors like that.. perhaps you downloaded their registry tool.
