SSD questions, new to SSD drives

Does a SSD drive need to be defrag? I read some say no and some say yes. Now it should just be swapped out with my old drive with the same plugs, right? This is only a extra drive not my booting drive. It there any other things I need to do or know, thanks!

No defrag needed. None at all.

As for connecting one ... are you buying an M.2 plug in card or a 2.5" SATA drive?

I have the 2.5 SATA drive. Sorry forgot to mention that, so many different kind of drives these days.

The reason you dont defrag is its so fast anyway and to defrag you have to move many blocks to do it which reduces its life as it has limited read/writes

Yeah was one of the reasons that I read that said you didn't have to defrag them.

Windows 10 can recognize the difference between a Hard drive and a Solid State drive.
I run Both on my system. Defrag will defrag Hard drives and Trim SSDs.

An SSD is a random access device, so there would be no gain in defragmenting it. "Trim" is needed because of the overwrite issue with Flash storage. (Spinners don't have that - overwriting old data is the same as writing to a blank disk.)

So since I have the sata drive all I have to do is use the same cables from the old regular drive?

Yes, if the old drive is also SATA.

Why would you have an SSD and not use it for your booting drive?!?
