no yellow triangle in Device Manager, but new card hangs system

My system is Windows 10 Pro 64, updated to 1809. I just bought this 4-port SATA card, https://www.amazon.com/IO-Crest-Cont.../dp/B00AZ9T3OU and plugged it in. The card comes with a driver CD for Win 7-8, by the way.

Device Manager does not show any yellow triangles, so that the new card seems to have all the necessary drivers.

However, when I plug in any drive cable, even from a non-boot drive, the system hangs. All I see is a black screen with a blinking white cursor.

Because I don't see any yellow triangles, how do I know which SATA controller needs the new driver from the CD? I know the new card uses a Marvel 9215 chip. Any tools to identify which cards have which SATA chip? Any other tools?

Except for this new card, all the other SATA controllers are built into the motherboard.

Not related directly to question but single pci-express lane for 4 sata disks/ssds is suboptimal.

how do I know which SATA controller needs the new driver from the CD?
No marvell sata controllers need special driver, they are standard sata ahci compatible. If you want to know which controller is marvell one, see vendor string (red) in its hardware id, for example: PCI\VEN_1B4B&DEV_9230&SUBSYS_92301B4B&REV_11; it should be 1B4B. Or switch device manager to devices by connection mode and check conected disks.

See device string (blue) in hardware id.

However, when I plug in any drive cable, even from a non-boot drive, the system hangs.
Bios reset and disk boot order setting may be needed.

Appreciate the explanation about the Marvell SATA controller not needing a special driver. But I guess I didn't explain right with the first post. My bad. I tried to connect a NON-BOOT drive. (My bad explanation before. The boot drive is still connected to the motherboard. The system boots up fine with the new card in the system as long as no drives are connected.

But when I tried to connect a NON-BOOT drive, a HGST 4 TB drive, the system won't even boot. The system does boot up as long as both non-boot drives are connected to SATA ports on the motherboard.

Use F8 to select boot device. If this works, you need to review the following settings: Boot Option Priorities, Boot Override, Hard Drive BBS Priorities.

Other things to try - use sata III cable, disable onboard controllers, use different pcie port.

Btw ASUS P9X79 Pro should have 8 internal sata ports, do you have more disks?

No I don't have more disks, but I do have possibly failing ports. HD Sentinel shows alarming numbers of errors for the SSD and one of the HDDs yet the SMART numbers for the SSD are excellent. I also get a lot of spinning circles when I do different Windows operations. Since January, on and off I have had lots of BSODs. The other day, I had five in less than one hour.

I ran memtest86 for 12 passes and got zero RAM errors. Howvever, a few months ago, the A1 and D1 ram slots stopped working. Those memory sticks had no errors once I put them into the two remaining good RAM slots, after running memtest86 for 8 passes.

So i'm pretly sure that either the CPU or the Southbridge (?) is failing. I got the SATA ports card in an effort to prolong the life of this board.

I switched the SATA card to a different PCIE port. Same results.

The only thing I haven't tried is to disable at least the Intel onboard ports, shut down, and then move the boot drive to one of the SATA ports on the new card.

Probably waste of time & money, addon card in sick mobo/proc can exhibit anything.

You did not mention neither result of F8 selecting boot device (and bios settings) nor whether you use sata III cable.

No, because I thought that I should first try this card with a data drive, and boot off a motherboard SATA port. I'm pretty sure that these are SATA 3 cables, because they came with the motherboard.

The F8 selecting boot device - when I had the boot device plugged in to the new card, the system would not boot. Otherwise, it boots just fine.

I'm trying to get another 3-4 months out of this motherboard, partly because I'm just too busy right now to figure out my choices for my next build, and partly because I want to see about new products being announced at Computex, which is this week in Taiwan.

Probably need the Marvel 92XX drivers from Marvel, similar card here, different brand. I'm using the 2013 driver, the older one from this thread.

Thanks. I'll give these Marvell drivers a shot. However, I read through that entire thread, and it doesn't sound like the Marvell drivers are that great for reliability.
