    USB DVD Writer freezing programs

For a few months I'm dealing with a weird problem with my portable DVD Writer. Every time I'm plugging it on to my computer, it freezes my CD Burner program. I can't open Task Manager, Device Manager, nothing really... And the problem disappears as soon as I'm unplugging it.

At first I thought my Writer is broken, but when I checked it on my laptop, it works just fine. Now I think it's more of a drivers conflict, but I don't know where to look.

Does the external DVD drive have it's own power adapter? It may require it as the USB port may not be providing enough power.
When it freezes your computer, hard shut down your computer. then unplug the USB cable from the computer. Restart the computer and plug the USB cable directly into a different port then the previous one, do not plug it into a USB Hub or extender, as this weakens the signal.

    It doesn't. It's just USB.

I just tried that and nothing changed.
And when I plugged it before logging to the system, it froze it on the log in screen.

Some older dvds required a special "Y" plug two usb connectors to provide power and data, one connected to the dvd.

It isn't that old. Besides, on that single cable it works perfectly on my laptop.

You mention a laptop. But you don't mention what the troubled computer is? Desktop?
If a desktop, be sure to plug the USB cable directly into the Back USB port of the computer and not the front as the front ports are weaker. Also, if you have a choice, do not plug the drive into a USB 3.0 port (Blue) as the 2.0 port is more compatible.
There are no drivers required for USB devices, All USB devices should be plug an play, unless the USB port of the computer is not providing enough power, like a front USB port, or thru a Port replicator or Hub.

Oh, right, I forgot to mention that. Yes, it's desktop.

Huh, I didn't know that matter. But I checked the USB 2.0 as well, same result - not working.

Plugging it to the back USB port ended with the same result. But it's also worth to mention that other usb devices seems to work: my mic, my flash drive, my external HDD drive. The only issue seems to be around the DVD Writer.

But then again, if it's broken, it shouldn't work on my laptop, right?

Laptops can provide more power to the usb there are fewer then a desktop, My ole desktop has 2 3.0
5 2.0 usbs while my laptops have 3.
I didn't mean to give offence with the old comment. All my computers are dated, the oldest is about 2003.The newsest 2016.
As for the Y cable I use one with my external Blueray player/recorder.
