    Drive name shown in Explorer is different from volume label

    I have an external USB drive with the volume label "HDD-2." But when I connect it, Explorer shows the name as "Toshiba Canvio Hard Drive."

    Drive name shown in Explorer is different from volume label-hdd-2-label-vs-drive-name.jpg

    If I attempt to rename it in Explorer (right click -> Rename), the name reverts to "Toshiba Canvio Hard Drive" as soon as I hit enter.

    What's going on?

    Check in the drive's root folder for a file called autorun.inf [you might need to show hidden files to see it].

    You can read the file on NotePad. I suspect that it contains the line
    Code:
    label="Toshiba Canvio Hard Drive"
    and this overrides whatever you set as the label using the normal method.

    You can simply delete the line or, if it contains nothing else useful, delete the whole file.

    If you ever decided to set up a label the way Toshiba have set this one up then you could use the guidance in Change Drive Icon - TenForumsTutorials

    Thanks! That worked like a charm.
