Are my hard drives supposed to use Microsoft drivers

Just curious about something. I noticed in device manager that my hard drives are all using Microsoft drivers. I do have the latest firmware installed for them. The manufacturer's website does not have any drivers listed for the drives. Maybe this is just how it is, but I was curious, so I thought I would ask.

It's standard as far as I know.

I have 3 drives, 3 different brands, from 2 months to 5 years old. All 3 are using Microsoft drivers dated June 21, 2006.

    Thanks for the confirmation.

    Lery,

And don't worry about that 2006 driver date. You'll see lots of MS drivers with that date.

MS uses the old driver date as a fudge to ensure that default drivers do not take priority over any drivers supplied by hardware makers.
I do not suppose for one moment that you want to read a fuller explanation about the 2006 date so don't bother going to Why are all Windows drivers dated June 21, 2006 - MSDNBlogs

That's normal but the drive controller should be using an Intel IRST driver for performance - I have iaStorA.sys

Mine looks to be using Microsoft driver. MSI's website does not have any drivers for it.

Use this excellent site if MSI don't provide the IRST driver Forum - Intel RST/RSTe Drivers (newest: v17.2.6.1027 WHQL/v6.0.0.1342 WHQL)

I'm reading through that post, thank you for the link. I'm having a hard time understanding what drivers to actually get. Using the Samsung Magician software, I can confirm that my SSD drive is using AHCI mode, connected to the SATA III controller. When I reference the specs, the controller utilizes the Intel B85 Chipset. When I look over his download links, and charts, I don't see that listed. I'm not using RAID, so I don't need to install the complete IRST/IRST(e) Drivers & Software Set as he recommends not to do.

Ok I got it! I had to use the hardware ID, to find the device ID. That was PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8C02&SUBSYS_78501462&REV_05 which I matched up to his chart as 8-Series /C220 (Type A). Downloaded the Intel RSTe AHCI/RAID drivers from the v5.5 branch and installed. Now I have the following for my controller, which looks much better:

I wonder if I should try tracking down that Microsoft Storage Spaces Controller. No idea what that is.
