I have a 237GB SSD C drive which is showing it only has 16 GB of storage remaining.
I have added up the storage space of all its folders and miscellaneous files which total less than 90 GB.
It would seem that there should be 147 GB of storage left
What am I missing???
You can't rely on the apparent sum of the folders being the true amount of used space if you are adding up something you see in File Explorer.
Is this 16 GB remaining taken from Windows Disk Management? From a DOS prompt command? Or?
Most likely, that's accurate. You should do what you can to delete unnecessary files and folders. You can delete the hibernation file if you don't use hibernation. That alone will save a decent chunk.
Deleting old restore points can also help. They can add up to 10's of GB if left unchecked, but are so well hidden that you can't see them in File Explorer.
Have you got a windows.old folder that can be 30 gig and you need to run disk cleanup twice after first scan select system files and run again
You can probably trust File explorer to calculate the size of your own folders but not folders used by the system. Use TreeSize [free] to get decent results.
Do you keep your own files on this drive or just your OS with programs?
Have you checked
- the size allocated to its Recycle bin [Recycle bin, Properties]?
- that regular defragging is taking place [for an SSD this consists of just "re-trimming"]?
- that you have run Disk cleanup including system files?
