Intel Chipset Driver installation information on Asus ROG STRIX Z370-E

Forgive all the questions, but I have not done this before and need some help understanding the process.

My system is custom built by Maingear in 3/2018 and the ASUS Mob has all the original drivers installed by them.

    This week the Windows 10 Pro x64 v1803 Updater wanted to install "Intel-System 4/11/2018 12:00AM 1815.12.0.2021".

I did not allow (hearing to never allow Windows to install drivers) and per internet found out this was an Intel Management Engine driver. So went to ASUS website and found they had same driver available in zip form for my board from 7/25/2018. So I downloaded and installed following ASUS instructions.

So far so good (I guess). I noticed that ASUS also has an Intel Chipset Driver available the same date, 7/25/2018. I downloaded the zip file, unzipped and opened the ASUS setup file to take a look at. The Intel setup screen has a Read.me file which looked way to complex for me so I cancelled out of the installation.

My question(s) is, "does this same dated Chipset Driver need to be installed since I installed the Intel Management Engine Interface with the same date"? I'm thinking no since all (so far) seems OK but????

My research on Chipset drivers indicates that it is not a driver at all but a collection of inf files? Also something to the effect that in order to install one, you need some special commands, etc?

Could you provide a little more insight on Chipset drivers, do they need to be updated, and how to properly install them - eg: interactive, silent, special commands & how?

    Thanks

Hi, I'm wondering where you heard this... if you literally followed that, your PC would only be useful as a rather limited room heater.

Windows installs drivers and downloads drivers if necessary as part of the installation process.

Occasionally you might get an updated driver delivered.

A very few people find they experience a problem following a particular driver being installed: it is possible to block such selectively whould that prove necessary.

The converse case would be those who like the idea of 3rd party driver updating tools- whose routine use can definitley not be commended.

An interesting case might be this:
    KB4465065 Intel Microcode Updates for Windows 10 v1809 - April 5 Windows Update - Windows 10 Forums

    - which is a manual only download and not offered via Windows update.

Chipset drivers are updated to include the more recent chipsets, nothing changes for the old ones which are usually exactly the same. The driver as such is sectionalised into a vast range of chipsets going back many years. You may get an updated version number and date, however for the older chipsets it is just numbers.

You can see this in the INF file, the relevant section is installed automatically for any given chipset.
    Don't worry about it.
Other components like Intel Management Engine components and Intel Rapid Storage are installed at every Windows 10 version update anyway. On mine in October 2018, the 1809 version update.
Job done by Windows 10 updates, zero effort.

One cannot ignore the simple fact that 3rd Party device's manufacturers are much better suited to supply correct / matching device driver that will utilise said device full capabilities, than OS manufacturer who will merely supply only the basic one, just allowing it to work.

Just my two pence (and no, I have never relied on Windows supplying these for my systems and never went wrong with it).

Intel chip set do not include any driver. The only thing that include is a better description name in device manager. I see a lot of users that don't understand it.

The only drivers you need is Intel management engine.

My comment was more general and was not aimed at Intel chipset but manufacturer's device drivers in general. You surely do use nVidia drivers that you get directly from them rather than relying on Microsoft supplying them to you?

    Besides in this particular case:

    1. From your snippet:

    2. Z370 was released in Q4 2017, whereas Windows 10 precedes that date (formally, I know I know).

    Intel® Z370 Chipset Product Specifications

    3. Also elsewhere (https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/28182/Chipset-INF-Utility) to strengthen my case:

The Intel Chipset Device Software installs the Windows* INF files. An INF is a text file that provides the operating system with information about a piece of hardware on the system. In the case of the current Intel Chipset Device Software, that information is primarily the product name for the piece of hardware. This allows the operating system to show the correct name for that piece of hardware in Device Manager.

    4. Thus it will not hurt having it updated, even for the sake of it:

    Downloads for Intel® Z370 Chipset

    Or, as Intel suggests:

The driver or software for your Intel® component might have been changed or replaced by the computer manufacturer. We recommend you work with your computer manufacturer before installing our driver so you don’t lose features or customizations.

Which is exactly what OP was asking about:

So went to ASUS website and found they had same driver available in zip form for my board from 7/25/2018. So I downloaded and installed following ASUS instructions(...) I noticed that ASUS also has an Intel Chipset Driver available the same date, 7/25/2018.

how to properly install them - eg: interactive, silent, special commands & how?

Thanks all for your comments so far. Could you address my last question shown again above in the event I wanted to perform the chipset update using the ASUS posted update for my Mobo?

As stated when I unzipped the ASUS file and started the installation, I was presented with an Intel setup screen that contained a Read-me file. That file was confusing as it said an installation method needed to be selected - interactive or silent or something else I dont recall, then some other things to do. I was expecting the more normal agreement and install buttons.
Can you walk me through exactly how to use this Intel installer?

    Thx
